I Ran to Boston!

Of course I haven't even run a full marathon yet, so there's no way that I'm "Running Boston"... just so there's no confusion.

I'm not sure that the Boston Marathon is a goal of mine... I know it is for a lot of people, but I guess we're each motivated by different things. Perhaps it's because I've only done a Half so far, and the speed required to qualify is a long way off my pace, so while I'm goal driven, I'm also not delusional. LOL But I'm ok with this! I have a huge respect for the distance of the marathon; those that qualify; those that didn't, but tried their best; and those that are out there running 6+ hour marathons.  In fact, anyone who puts time and hours in training for a marathon and makes it to the start line.

So this morning, I was thinking about my goal for 2009, and a new way to motivate myself. Picking a distance that would challenge me, but perhaps would have a bit of a story to it.  So I thought, instead of "running Boston" how about running TO Boston.  Never been there, so why not! Also, a friend of mine qualified for Boston this past October, maybe that's part of why I chose this destination?

So I googled the starting line of Boston, put in my Toronto home address as the start, and got the distance.

Ready for this?? Cuz it's about to get pretty weird! If you scroll down and check out my last post.... my distance then, this past Wednesday, was 864km, so technically I ran to Boston this year, and just hit the start line!!!!! :) How random is that! This will probably be the only time I hear congratulations on making it to Boston! LOL!!!!!

I guess I have to pick somewhere else to run to!

I am also participating in NikeMom's Virtual Run Across America.  Head on over there if you haven't checked it out yet, looks like it'll be fun!

I've been working on my training plan for the next few months too. Sunday is the end of the 7 week plan I have been using to return from injury.  It's almost like saying goodbye to an old friend!  My running group is obviously a lot farther along, and no, I'm not going to jump right into the distances that they're doing. So I think I now have it where I'll be at their distance on the Sunday long runs in about 6-8 weeks, and if all goes well, should be able to work up to the 30k race for March 29th.  I'm hopeful, but will listen to my body above all else.  If I'm not ready, there will be other races.

So here's where I need your help.  Where should I run to in 2009?  Know any good destinations? Anyone want me to virtually visit them? I would love to get to Australia, Europe, South America one day... just to name a few, but I haven't been blessed with the ability to run across water, so let's keep it accessible by land for now.  Maybe I'll plan Australia or Europe for a real trip one day :)  Any suggestions?

Hi Melanie:

Now I know that I'm not the only one who sets LONG distance goals like that.

I live in Greater Vancouver, and one of the first *big* goals I set was to "run to Calgary". I made it in July of this year.

Needing a new goal, I figured I might as well just keep going. So, I'm now just outside Swift Current, Saskatchewan. If all goes well, I should make it past Winnipeg before next May... which is when the Vancouver Marathon is held (my other running goal).

That's cool!! Not sure I am going to be much help in figuring out a good goal for you for next year though,

That's pretty cool how you broke it down like that.

Also a great goal for next year - running to another destination. I guess Hawaii would be a little far?

I was thinking it would be pretty neat to run from city to city in Canada. Or you could "run" the length of the US-Canada border in Ontario (2,760 km or 1,715 mi). Just a few thoughts. Congrats on making it to Boston!

That's so cool. You ran to Boston. Well, you mention Oz as a destination for 2009. I don't know how keen you would be on a Vitual Triathlon but if you were, you could probably visit me in Brisbane. :-)

Love it!

Great idea! I like to idea of running around the world- maybe to the cities I want to visit and plan a "route" between. Great motivating idea!

great idea, and congrats on running to boston! :) maybe you could pick your goal mileage for next year and then see what destinations are roughly that far away? i know you swim some too so you could also throw in a city that would 'require' some swimming to get there? i'm in south carolina, you could run to the beach (charleston) for around 950 miles.

Congrats on making it to Boston, Mel! ;) It's okay... I doubt I'll ever make it there myself (at least not before retirement) which is why I'm tagging along with Patricia. At least I can say I went.

I can't believe you have completed your 'return from injury program' already, and you followed it so diligently - I know it will pay off.

I have an idea - why don't you run to Vancouver and try to "arrive" before the Olympics start in early 2010?

That is so neat! That is some serious mileage!!

Pretend you're a bad girl. Run off to Mexico.

That is pretty cool. Where are you going to run to next?

Are you still planning to run your first marathon next year, and this is just an addition?

Do what I did ... run your first one locally and then go international for the next one!

I'm trying to pick somewhere for '09. It's tempting to go back to Paris but I'm really liking the idea of somewhere different each year. Although I'm well off the distance training-wise right now .. but goals are there for motivation :)

This is such a great post. I think you should run all the way to Miami (virtually) and then reward yourself with a trip. Preferably in Jan or Feb!

Best of luck with your running.

That is pretty amazing that the distance works out perfect like that.

Good luck on your 2009 goal-- whatever it may be!
