Congrats to all those that raced this weekend! FrayedLaces that Boston qualified, Aron who PR'd by 20 minutes, and Dando who ran his first marathon to name a few! Awesome job to everyone else who raced!
Friday was my delightful 7k run from my last post, yesterday I went out early for a 4.5k tempo run, and by last night was really trying to decide what I was going to do. The snow was falling, temperatures freezing, and wind was already blowing. I typically meet with the running group at 7:30 am Sunday mornings, but already last night the sidewalks were slippery with ice, and covered with a good layer of snow. I'm obviously less of an athlete than Steve as I certainly wasn't going to bring a shovel with me to carve out my 13k run... lol.
Running has been going well, too well to risk an injury. I could just picture myself slipping on ice, and something bad happening. So I opted to make a "smart" decision, and decided that I'd just go to the gym, and run my 13k on a treadmill instead. Yes, boring, I know, but safer.
Here's part of the conversation yesterday evening:
Jay: What do you want to eat for dinner, since you're running in the morning?
Me: I'm only running 13k, so....
Jay: Ohhhhh, excuse me... "I'm only running 13k"... you can eat anything then I guess, since you're only doing 13k
Funny how less than 2 years ago, that statement would have never come out of my mouth!
I felt a little better with my decision made as I drove to the gym. Saw 2 runners out there, one which was arms up in the air trying to regain control and footing, and both which looked like they were having a miserable time -- looked like they were going backward running against the wind. This might be the year where I actually buy myself a pair of Yak Trax to try... anyone use them?
Planned on 13k/8miles, and that's what I ran... yes, the whole way! I've never run that long, or that far without walking so it was a pretty neat milestone! It was also my longest run since my injury and I feel fine, especially considering it's my 3rd day in a row!
I was 3 treadmills from the end of the row, close to the spinning room. At about 6 miles, boredom was starting to set in, but a spinning class had finished their warm up and were in the middle of what seemed to be a tough workout! The instructor was obviously very into it and yelling quite loudly, and with her mic, was loud enough to get myself, and 4 others on the treadmill giggling. We had a fairly good laugh, but I just imagined her on the sidelines of a race, pumping up the runners closing in on a finishing line to finish a race strong.
I'm now about 77k shy of meeting my original 1000k goal for 2008... it might be doable! (even if i don't, i'm still happy just being able to run considering the year i've had-- i'm not going to risk injuring myself just to meet the number...)
Have a great week everyone :)

Great run and way to recognize the progress you've made this year. Stay safe and warm!
I love my Yak Trax. Just make sure to get the pro version. Oh, and don't put them on indoors.
"only 13K"
yeah, that's definately a sign of progress. :-)
I don't know what I would do without my Yak Trax in the winter here. They are great. Make sure you get the pro version.
LOL at the "only 13K". I remember saying to my husband this summer "I'll be back soon. I'm only doing 10 miles." His response? "I thought today was your long run". LOL
Great job on getting back in the game!
8 miles on the mill? Whew!!
Stay warm :)
Great job with your run, especially on the treadmill!
Good job! Nothing like a little entertainment to bring it in:)
Smart to keep it indoors - especially when you can get to a treadmill. Congrats on 13 gook K!
Great job getting in those kms! I too am thinking about getting some Yak Trax, even though I don't live in a very snowy area. I'm not graceful though, so I think they'd be a good investment just in case.
That's excellent! After yesterday's post of mine, I got a lot of comments about running in cold or giving in to the treadmill. I admire that you could go that far on the mill as I think I would lose it. Good luck with the goal!
Smart decision to hit the treadmill. There is no need to risk an injury. Isn't it funny how distances that seemed so long only a short while ago is like nothing now.
I had to laugh at the conversation you had with Jay... been there! LOL!! Isn't it a great feeling? Glad you stuck with the treadmill. And I'm glad the new Pose Method is working great for you!! STILL need to get that book... :)
You've come a long way!
I can't believe you slugged it out on the treadmill for so long, but congrats on the milestone!
LMAO "only 13k" It's funny how we fast we progress.
Great job on the run....my friend Adam and I were having the same conversation this weekend, how we were "only running a 4 miler," and how a year ago that seemed so far....
HAHAHA only "13K"! Way to make 13K come out as an only :-)
Your progress is awesome. Way to go!!
"only"... it certainly is motivating to see your progress and be able to say "only" in front of any distance! good call on running inside and praises must be given for any run survived on a treadmill:)
Great job on the TM 13k. Still laughing at the "I'm only running 13k." It's crazy what becomes "only," and that it's hard to go back to that point in time when any running at all was truly miraculous!
Yak Trax are a life saver when it's slippery, but I think they are kind of a pain. Sometimes I'll carry them with me and put them on just when I hit the slipperiest (is that a word?) spots.
Great job!!!
Smart moves all around. I used to run only on a treadmill in a gym. Then I let my membership lapse because I enjoy running outside.
But not in the ice and snow.
So the gym membership is good to have as an ace in the hole on bad days. The whole idea here is to stay healthy, right? Why risk it running on ice?
Also, good move with the 1000k goal: If you make it, great. If not? Whatever distance you run will add up to 1000 (or more) in some metric or other.
If you fall short, say you ran "1000 brubeeras" because "brubeera" was my word verifcation.
Now, inexplicably, I'm thirsty for a brew. Or a beer. Odd ...
funny we start to get used to different distances
Seems like just last year I couldn't even run 2 miles without wanting to lay down. Oh yeah...it WAS just last year!!!!
Happy running!!!!
Good job on the 8 miler without walking =)
Sometimes the treadmill is just so much easier.
THANK YOU :)
