headwind vs. tailwind

headwind = running backwards, while still facing forward.

tailwind = taking flight... almost literally

Lying in bed this morning, I heard the wind howling... so I stayed in bed a little longer.  Got up, had breakfast, contemplated hitting the gym for another treadmill run.  Despite the wind, the sun was shining, and I longed to be outside.

Looked at the weather forecast, not surprisingly, a wind warning, with 93 km/h wind gusts. No doubt.  Saw a few other hardcore runners out there, if they can brave the wind, so can I. Got dressed, and headed out.

Picked a 10k loop, where I'd be able to run on the streets rather than the puddle filled sidewalks for most of my run, with lots of shortcuts if I needed to cut the run short.

Although it was probably common sense, I was caught off guard a few times by flying sticks, leaves, diapers, garbage can lids, falling fences or other random debris.  Yes, I dodged a few of these, and inhaled a leaf as it flew into my mouth.  Gotta learn how to breathe through my nose.  I have a nice red line on my upper thigh from a stick that flew into my leg and left it stinging for a good while, but posting a picture would make this unacceptable as a G rated blog. :)

It wasn't a fast run, the first half was going west into a very strong headwind... and up a gradual incline. More often than not, I felt like I was going backwards, since my forward moving pace was so incredibly slow into the wind.  I really didn't care too much about pace today, I was just happy to be out there. Headed north for a bit then back east, at which point, if I had wings, the wind would have easily carried me home.  What a difference! Definitely a run with negative splits!  The whole way back was with a tailwind. Yay.

991.9km this year, 8.1km to go! :)

Good job dodging the nasty flying objects. I'd call that interval training ;)

Way to get it done. I definately would have skipped the run if facing wind like that. I'm a weather wimp.

Diapers? Really? Does that word mean the same in Canadian as it does in the American Language (aka, the Language God Speaks)?

Because I had always heard you Canadians were cleaner (and pastier) than us Yanks. But if you toss your diapers so cavalierly into the wind, you might just be less nice (and potentially less pasty) than I had heard.

Seems you may've done your 2008 Wrap-Up Post a little early, since I'd say your goal of 1000 km is about to go down.

Good for you. You deserve it, what with your running in a diaper storm and all.

I guess it could have been worse, but it beggars the imagination exactly how ...

Give yourself some big points for going out in that.

Nicely done! You're on the home stretch for that 1,000 km!

76 km/h winds??!!

I think Canadian pronounce it "die-a-pers", like 3 syllables. ;)

man those winds are tough! I have been trying to brave them lately, but they sure do require some extra energy

Oh come on, we've seen so much of your legs already, right down to the bones! lol

Awesome job getting out there. That wind was insane. But wasn't it a crazy and amazing feeling when it was coming up behind you?!

Glad you got out there and ran! I'm so jealous. I've been running on the mill for the last week and I'm desperate for an outside run.

Good job on the run, love those tailwinds. Great job with your mileage too, especially with all you have had to contend with!

Sounds more like dodgeball than running! You must have some quick reflexes! Great job on the run. 8km to go until 1000? Awesome!

Man what a nasty run. Way to get out there and not let the weather hold you back.

I can honestly say I would never ever run in those conditions. Ever.

But...you should make a sail and catch the wind. Imagine how fast you could be???? Ha!!!

Great job in the wind!

I'm such a wuss about running in wind. I can do hot and cold, but I'm not nearly tough enough for wind gusts like that.

Awesome, Melanie. Tailwind on the home straight is always a plus. They actually always tell you in cycling to choose your route to head into the headwind first. Dodging flying debris, however, is not so good. Glad, it wasn't the diaper that landed in your mouth - eeeek! Hope the bruise disappears quickly, the weather gets better soon and that you will be able to spend lots of time outside again.

Great job! I would have heard the wind and pulled the covers over my head.
