Rockin' the Knee-Highs

Last night I purchased a pair of athletic compression socks, which I wore for about an hour while catching up on blogs last night. Felt a little dorky with my socks pulled up to my knees, but at least I was in the comfort of my house. Jay remembered that I bought him the pair shown in the photo a few years ago for football... which have now been passed down to me. :)  I put them on last night as well just to try on, perfect fit! I have bigger calves than him, so he's now resigned to the fact that these fit me better than him! Yay, i have Under Armour compression socks!

So now you've seen my legs in an xray, a bone scan and knee-highs! LOL     was that a whistle i heard?

I woke up this morning and hopped dragged my butt out of bed. Hmmm, my first step wasn't awkward!  Made a mental note.

I had a fairly good break in my day, so I did a quick 30 min spin on my bike, which has never aggravated my legs, so no problem.

I was faced with a few options.  Legs were feeling pretty good, so I could take today as a rest day from running, which would be only 2 days in a row and run tomorrow instead.  Crap, weather is calling for 10-15cm of snow overnight, and a pretty crappy day tomorrow.  I chose to try a short run today since the roads are clear of snow and ice, and use tomorrow as a rest day instead.

I used the UA compression socks for my run; it was pretty cold, so I figured the added benefit of keeping my tight muscles warm would be great.

So socks under tights make for a pretty weird feeling at first, but my legs were nice and cozy. Short jog up my street to warm-up, things are feeling good!  I only ran 5k as it was on the verge of darkness, and after having the week i've had with negative thoughts and feelings, I thought I'd end on a positive feeling rather than take a chance to push it too hard and regret it.

So there you have it. My first impression on these socks are great! I spoke to my mom who is a nurse, working with geriatric patients, who also does foot care. She said to be really careful with "true" compression socks that are more intended for circulation problems, diabetics, as they are typically prescribed by a doctor, and properly fitted for the patient with the correct amount of compression.  These being athletic socks, sold in any fitness apparel store, I'm not worried, but I'm certainly no medical expert, so there's my disclaimer. Definitely worth a chance!

One of my best friends called me tonight and begged and pleaded for me to meet her at one of the busiest malls in the city. Ugh... I really didn't want to go, but haven't seen her in a while, so it would seem that I'm not the only one that has left shopping to the last minute. Mission accomplished though, I'm about 90% done, and she's pregnant! I'm so excited for her. So today was definitely a better day; a good day -- hope you're having one too :)

Thanks to those of you who voted for me and for the kind words!  Much appreciated!

Nice socks. I'm not exactly sure what the benefits are from wearing them though.

Glad the socks seem to be working for you.

*shudder* at the thought of going near a mall.

Yes, they do work. I first bought a pair of compression thighs on a work trip when I had to run for a few days (because I couldn't ride) and then I could hardly walk ... One night's sleep in those and I was as good as new. :-)

Got 90% of your shopping done AND got her pregnant!? You ARE a good friend!

(Joke.)

Nice job on the run. Glad the sox are working for you.

Be sure you take good care of that baby you just made. In a mall!! And people say Canadians are restrained!

That's funny that you mentioned that your mom is a nurse, I was going to say that the compression socks are the ones that I prescribe for diabetics and for patients with poor circulation. You are fine to wear them anytime though.. mild chance of a blood clot, not for you though..too active anf you would have to wear them for a week straight..

First time on your blog. Very nice. I will come back. As for the socks, I've always wondered about them. I get cramps in the calfs alot when I'm swimming. Can I wear them in the water?? LOL.

I've been wanting to try a pair of compression socks. I think they look great, very private boarding school girlish.

2XU has some rock'n compression socks. ZOOT makes male and female compression socks You can find them on trisports.com.

I am also a big believer in compression recovery suits. But I am also a dork!
