The Running Circle gets smaller!

If any of you have read my blog for a while, you'll know that I've 'been around the block' a few times with shoes. I've had a very open relationship with shoes. I have had a very difficult time remaining loyal to any brand, but I wish I could be.  I thought I had it nailed with the Saucony shoes that I bought just before being diagnosed with the stress fractures, but with less than 200km on them, the material and padding on the inside back of the heel of both shoes have already worn through to the plastic.

I wrote to Saucony, they suggested bringing them back to the original place of purchase, but it's been too long since they were bought prior to my injury, but were just not being used.  So Saucony has now said to ship the shoes back to them for further inspection. Hopefully I'll get a replacement, but who knows.  Glad they're willing to help though!

I won a pair of shoes from Runners' Lounge this year, and ordered the same pair of Saucony's, again thinking these were the pair.  I ordered the exact same size, but these came from the US. Glaven, was there perhaps something I missed in the conversion of shoe sizes that perhaps I wasn't aware of?!  These shoes feel sooooo much narrower, and now I have a ripe, huge blood blister on the side of the ball of my right foot, which I'll spare you by not posting a picture.  It hurts, and rubs in my shoe with each step. Sigh. I've already run 78km/48 miles in these, not sure if they'd stretch any more to accommodate my foot, and they're not getting any more comfortable.

So, I went to a local Running Room store a few minutes up the street, which has recently turned into a clearance center due to changing locations.  I figured I'd go check out what they had, in the off chance that there would be a few that might work for me.  I hadn't brought my orthotics, so was testing out a bunch of shoes, and with each one, he said my ankle did funny things. Before making any purchase, I told him to put them on hold, and that I'd be back with my orthotics to see if it made a difference.  Went back about an hour later, and started the whole process again. The guy was great though, very patient, and super helpful. I narrowed it down to 3, then 2; and got stuck.  It was between a Brooks Axiom and a Pearl Izumi SyncroPace.
I have a picture of both, because I bought both! They both felt great, I ran around the store a bunch of times, one on each foot, switching them up; could not decide, and for $59 each, why not! I probably would have paid about $120 at regular price for a pair anyway!  Yay for bargains.    :D

So after getting my shoes, I went to the gym, threw on the Brooks.  I wasn't planning on running yesterday, and after all the laps in the store, I'm sure I ran at least a mile!  There, I said it again. But I really wanted to check out the new kicks, so I ran about 1 km on the treadmill, just to warm up before weights.

My attire for the gym was a pair of pants with pockets to hold my ipod and gym card, and a long sleeve tech shirt that I purchased for charity at the race I ran in August -- turns out the shirt was the previous year's race shirt.

The gym was completely empty until a gentleman walked in, who I thought was there to workout, but got behind the desk.  I went to try my free trial of a H2O massage, which was great! I can get an unlimited number of these for $20/month!

Once the massage was finished, I went back to the front, and the gentleman points to my shirt, and says, I ran that race! I proceeded to tell him that I ran it this past year only, but that I want to do the 30k this year.  Turns out that he was one of the pace bunnies for the 30k and is the owner of the gym that I just joined!  Not sure he liked the fact that I asked him if he wore a tutu during the race (it's a Shakespearean theme run... so everyone is in costume).  He shyly answered yes, in front of another one of his staff members who was giggling by this point! Ooops! Sorry that your secret is out! :)  Just funny how big yet small the running community can be!

Merry Christmas to you all, and your families!  Safe travels, and cherish the time spent with family and loved ones!

Such pretty new kicks! I'm very wed to my mizunos. Before that, I had a very long relationship with my asics.

Merry Christmas!

Good luck with the shoes.

The best for me so far have been Nike+ Vomero 3. I have an extra pair stashed in my closet for when the ones i'm in now need to be replaced. But the NM 1062s are working okay for me too.

Shoes are tricky!

When I first started reading this post, I was going to suggest trying a Brooks shoe. I ran in Asics for the longest time and then one day, after purchasing a new pair, I took them for a run and got the worst shin splints and knee pain. That was the 3rd time I wore them, but I knew there was something wrong. Somehow I cam across a Brooks Trance on clearance and fell in love. I have been wearing them for over a year and have had no real pain!

Glad to hear you went home with 2 pairs of shoes. The Pearl izumis look pretty!

Merry Christmas!

Shoes look great, I think I may be near the end of my first pair! My Nike's did well for my first year of running! I kind of get emotional thinking I may have to "retire" them! Happy Holidays!

Wow, 2 new shoes? Awesome!! Hope Saucony can replace your worn one. Less than 200 miles and already worn down to the plastic? Strange! I've been wearing Asics for the last 2 pairs but I love trying out new brands, too!

Merry Christmas!!

Sweet! 2 pairs for basically the price of 1!! Dang I wish I was in T.dot...not enough big discounts down here.

I had a pair of NB 1223's (actually wearing them right now as my leisure shoes) until they finally went away. I had intended to buy the 1224's until I decided to try some different brands. I ended up with Asics Gel Kayano 14's which are wicked-awesome for me. :)

Happy Xmas!

That's a steal - I would have bought both pairs too. Funny, I just mentioned in today's post that I have yet to find the right shoes. Sigh. I feel like a shoe whore, constantly switching back and forth and trying different brands. lol

I hope we BOTH find The Perfect Shoe soon.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I really wanted to try out Sauconys but I keep going back to Asics Gels. I love the Saucony swooshy thing but it can't be the reason I get them...LOL. I also need SOME pink on my sneakers or it just won't work.

Merry Christmas!!!!

Merry Christmas to you as well.

love the new shoes. i have the worst mindset when it comes to buying them - they have to 'look good' before i'll consider trying them on. fit? not important ;) hope these pairs work well for you.

have a very merry Christmas with your family!!

Sounds like you have completely overhauled your running wardrobe and at a bargain! Shoes are challenging. I bought 3 of the same shoes within a month because they were so comfy. Glad I did. Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas to you too!

Hope one of the pair of shoes will fit you great. I also have a hard time finding the perfect shoe for me. I thought I had it with Asics but I've never lost so many toenails since I got these shoes and 2008 was my lowest mileage year!! Not good.

Seems there are some great sales at RR, I think I'll have to hike there and see if I can get a new pair for cheap. I hate paying 150$ for shoes.

I think it's so cute how, now that you've been BUSTED, you still try to pull off the we-Canadians-use-kilometres trick. In this post, you say miles here, kilometers there. It used to GET ME SO ANGRY, but, now that I've won, it just amuses me.

As for shoe size conversions ... you're asking the wrong Yank, sister! I order my shoes online. And, like you, I thought I had found THE brand and THE type in that brand that fit me best. So I kept ordering that one.

And the last pair I ordered were just ... meh. Not horrible. Just ... meh. I hurt my knee while running in them so maybe I'm just blaming them for that.

See how much more reasonable I am? Before, I woulda blamed Canada.

You guys run in Shakespearean get-ups? Figures. The late-16th-to-early-17th-century was a period when England went collectively gay with their fashion. Way to keep THAT embarrassing tradition alive. I think the Brits themselves would rather forget it, the way I'd rather forget that Leisure Suit I wore in the 1970s.

I hope you appreciate the fact that I'm responding to you on December 25. Down here in the US, we celebrate a little something called "Christmas" on Dec 25. I know you Canadians are unfamiliar with it. But it's a Big Deal down here. Even Bigger than your Hockey Night in Canada TV Holiday.

Merry Hockey Night in Canada, Sister!

Swweeeet kicks! I hope they work out for you.

That's a great story about the gym owner. You gotta love the running community.
