dead batteries

I couldn't get a reading on the Garmin first thing this morning when I tried to check my resting heart rate. Thought my eyes were just fuzzy, and wasn't yet fully functional; didn't think much of it.

Car battery...dead due to the frigid temps. But me! My battery was raring to go! One thing I've noticed about working from home is that I need to get out of the house, whether for a run, a trip to the grocery store, wherever. Craving a homemade spaghetti sauce for dinner tomorrow, needed a few ingredients, so I gave my car one more chance. It worked! I grabbed my purse and my gym bag! Since I was going out in the FREEZING cold weather anyway when I was already much warmer inside, I'll hit the gym for a quick TM run since I didn't run outside today. Too cold.

Tried getting my HR with the Garmin once on the TM, no reading. Crap. So now that I'm starting to understand my body a bit more and knew my pace from my previous TM run, I just periodically checked my HR using the hand pads on the TM. Not a constant reading as I can't run holding those things all the time, but got a pretty good idea when I needed to lower or increase my speed. I got home and was able to find a replacement battery as I recently bought a pack to change my bike's cadence sensor battery too! Thank you Garmin for being consistent with the type of batteries you use, and Duracell for two-packs!

Tomorrow is supposed to be colder, so I will try to get back to the gym for another short run, or a bike workout in the warmth of the house, and will do my second workout of Jillian's (The Biggest Loser) 30 day Shred dvd in the morning.

Marcy, your question about if this is a long-term thing.  The way I understand it is that I shouldn't be this friggen slow forever, or for the long term. As I continue building my base, my speed should increase gradually while maintaining the same heart rate.  So I will try to stick with it as long as I can see some improvement.  How long that will take?  Who knows. From everything I've read, it will be months. If it keeps me injury free, healthy, happy, and less "winded" every time I head out for a run, then it will be worth the time/effort.  I will try to stick with it as long as possible, and if 2009 becomes a year of less races, more endurance/base building, becoming healthier, more efficient and training smarter, then so be it.

TFH, yes, my heart rate always seems lower on the bike!!  It takes me a lot longer to get up in the range, whereas running, I'm almost immediately in the aerobic zone when I start moving, and often too high. I also have a much easier time staying in the proper zone, with a lower perceived effort.

Keep the questions coming!  I love it! It forces me to think of things that I might not think of on my own, and makes me feel like that my own personal benefit is secondary!

Warmth, sunshine, please come back soon, please hurry.

Two words: damn winter. Hope you're liking the 30-day shred! It's nice to change things up a little.

My HR is lower on the bike too.

I can honestly say this again...I would not be a runner at all if I didn't live in Florida.

You are doing so well with this HR training!!! Go GIRLIE!!

You know what they say about 'slow and steady' - way to stick with it for the long haul. It seems you are already noticing some improvements and learning a lot about your body, and that is invaluable!

As you build that base with the slow and steady HR monitored runs, you will become fitter and find that over time you will be able to run faster with the same level of exertion (same HR). You will also minimize your chance of injury and overtraining. WTG Melly Melz!!

I have off tomorrow and wanted to do my long run but it's not going to get out of the teens! Um, never mind. I'll run at the gym!!

Hooray for car starting! I know what you mean about needing to get out of the house. And thanks for answering my question. Now I just wish I knew whether I am getting my heart up to the helpful range when swimming...

I have a question for you:

Why does Kim have to keep bringing up how great it is to live in Florida during the winter? I consider this to be blatant Canadian-baiting, which is MY territory because everyone knows I am the Master Baiter.

Wait.

Okay, after second inspection, that's correct: I am a Master Baiter.

I just long for one day of 40 degree weather to get a nice long run in!
This is a hard ass winter for sure!

I know exactly what you mean about having to get out of the house when you work from home. I'm the same way. And it so bums me out when it is cold like this because I not only have to bundle myself up, but my little guy, too! Ugh. Can't wait for warmer weather. Just a few degrees would make a big difference!

Sounds good to me :-) I just wasn't sure if you were going to put a time stamp on it. I like reading about your HR training. You're like the guinea pig HAHAH LOL JK! But you KWIM ;-)

One thing I don't miss from living up North is the cold and cold dead car batteries. At always the wrong time!
It seems that I hit my aerobic zone within 5-8 mins of running, too fast IMHO.
The 30 day shred video must be the bomb because everyone has one except me!

Thanks for the comment the other day! I enjoy reading your blog. I have a question, I just started out and I seem to get winded very very easily. Do you have any suggestions on improving that or does it just come with more running and getting healthier? I sometimes feel like my body wants to keep going but my lungs are saying I don't think so!!!

nice job at throwing in a trip to the gym with your errands! i probably would've just rushed to the store and back. i hate the cold so much. my hr is also harder to raise on the bike vs. running.

Forget the sunshine, I just want warmth!

I may have asked you this already, not sure... Since you want to train by heart rate have you thought about getting a VO2 max test so that you know exactly where your ranges are at for aerobic, anaerobic and max?

My bike heart rate zones are pretty different from my run heart rate zones and it is really hard for me to get my heart rate up than it is from running.

Good luck!
