hmm, looking back at week one

It's been a week now since I started this heart rate training. Learned a lot already, still a long way to go I'm sure.  I'll try to keep the math and numbers to a minimum as it seems to irritate some. (i thought this was my blog...and that i could do what I wanted with it, but apparently not... LOL totally kidding)

A few more observations that I've made along the way:
  • I'm starting to better understand my body's breathing and feeling when I'm approaching my upper limit of the aerobic zone -- not having to constantly check my Garmin
  • slightly faster pace, able to do more running on yesterday's run than walking, even though still very slow
  • chose a hillier route, had to walk up all the hills
  • headwind also increases my HR
  • planned for a 5k run, instead of following my planned route, I wanted to keep going and tacked on another 3k.  If I didn't have a class to teach after my run, I would have gone farther!
  • physically, I felt like I could go on for a long time... it was nice not being mentally defeated like I was getting with every single run since they were all in the 85%+ range
  • did 30 min on the bike today in HR zone, same as sunday, slightly faster pace, minimal increase to HR, singing the whole workout... you didn't hear me did you??
  • -0.5% body fat
Getting a cold snap here for the next few days, not sure with the slower pace how much running outdoors I'll be doing since it takes so much longer to warm up. Might be the treadmill for the next few runs.  I need to move south, anyone looking to adopt?

Sounds like it's working just as planned. Nice job. As you know, you aren't supposed to be pushing yourself to your performance limits. You are base building. So the secret to long term success is resisting the urge to push it.

They should adopt you an me!! LOL

Seems things are going well with the new training. Very happy to read you're getting less frustrated with the slow pace. I love that feeling that you can keep on going forever. I have it when I run with my Dad, he's working hard and I'm just having a walk in the park! LOl

Awesome to hear of some improvements already!

Try to make room for me in your adoptive home... I am NOT looking forward to the next few days. Thursday was a high of -21 last I checked. Not to mention wind chill. Brrrrrrrr!

Sounds like a great first week - way to stick with it! I'd adopt you, but you probably want to get a little further south . . . :)

Glad to hear you are learning more about your body and what it is capable of doing when given certain circumstances...

I am ready to move south too. -40 is rediculous.

Agree with what BR commented.

I heard you singing.

A move south might make it easier to run, but would miss out on some fun snow runs.

Did G bust on you for the digits?! LOL

Sounds like it's coming along nicely Mel! Is this going to be a long term thing, do you think? Or just something that you're going to try for a couple months and then move on?

I want to try my heart rate monitor for my garmin and I think you just gave me a few reason to do so, awesoem job. You can learn a lot in a week, huh?

I love the feeling of wanting to tack on some more mileage, feels awesome.

Exciting news, Melanie! I'm glad things are looking up. I recently gave a speech at a local "Curves" abotu HR training and how they can tell if they're pushing too much. Great progress, and it's definitely more of a long-term approach to training. way to go!

I'd offer to adopt you, but really, it's not very warm here either.

Good job sticking with the HR training. Sounds like it's really working for you!

i love all the facts you've noticed so far, and i know you will look back in the weeks and months to come and and see even more progress.
