i'm a wogger

I thought I was clever Sunday morning while out for my 'wog' -- coming up with a new term, but nope, seems that 'wogging' is quite common.  It's the middle ground of walking and jogging, and seems to be what I've been doing lately.

My LT test has been scheduled for Feb 2nd.  Until then, I'm going to loosely follow the HR training when I'll get my proper training zones.  I did get a bit of reassurance though last night. I found a forum discussing heart rate training, with real people, not elite athletes or professionals talking about their experience.

The guy posting was talking about having to slow to a 7:30/km or slower pace to stay within his base building zone, in effect, wogging -- and if I remember correctly, he even used the term... that's when my ego bubble burst!  (I'm having to go even slower than this to stay in my zone... which is another reason why I want to go through with the test...).  Following this method of training, after 12 weeks he was under 7:00/km, and eventually his pace increased to 6:05/km at the same HR!

Reading the forum thread, which can be found here,  helped me immensely.  My previous post listed a bunch of questions that I had/have, the above answered a bunch of them.  It provides me a realistic timeline, a guideline to give me an idea of how long I should be prepared to stick with it.  It also helps me realize that even though I feel like I'm no longer a 'runner', this is a phase... and others are having to slow down tremendously to adjust as well.  Certainly helps to know you're not alone.

I'm not doing this with the delusion of becoming something I will never be, but I'm amazed by our bodies...

Well, you could always cross "runnre" and "walkre" (note Canadian spellings) to get "wunnre", but then if you called yourself that, people would think you were either a runner with a speech impediment or ... a Canadian.

*Shudder*

Canadian!

Good luck with your program, sistre!

Hope all goes well with the HRT!

That must be re-assuring to read about some similar experiences with the program, and especially the great success that guy had!

Your testing will probably shed a lot of light on all of this.

I think it's great that you're doing all this research...this is exactly why I don't bother with HR training. But I know I should.

Hope all goes well. I'm interested to see how it works out!

I'm kind of glad you're filling me in on all this stuff. I struggle to find the motivation to do all the research.

Wow, it's really cool to hear how others have improved using the HR training-- sounds like the "wogging" isn't forever!

I often wog myself. Especially in my cold weather. Or hills. Or if you see a Blue Heron. In my running group we got special rules for "observing nature" If you see a blue heron or favorite bird of choice you must stop or walk. Posting pictures on certain hills is very helpful.

I was SO totally a wogger from miles 20-26 this w/e! Totally crazy, running slower than some walkers.

thanks for sharing this forum link. i've been telling myself for awhile that i'm going to do base/hr training after goofy and well, now is that time. i've really been soaking up all of your experience and 'lessons learned' and what not.

i know you'll eventually get past the 'woggle' stage too. hang in there!

You know what, your body will progress in ways you will never imagine. Start logging your distances and paces now... in a year, you'll be amazed!

It's all about building a solid base!

PS FYI wog is the same as the 'n' word in the UK!

Good post! I'm glad you are the guinea pig on the HR training. It seems so many here want to find out the same info that you are partaking in. I think you have read from my blog that it is hard for me to wog because it seems counterintuitive.
Andrew has been experimenting for a while with the "slowdown" HR training and will run a half marathon soon to see if it really works. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.
Go, go go guinea... ;)
