Layer me up!

With the wind chill warning lifted (even though it was still -30℃/-22℉ with wind), and the sun shining brightly, I decided to hit the road rather than the TM. Getting ready for a winter run takes time...

Layer #1 -> UA Cold Gear hooded shirt...

Love the little fold-over hand thingys. Great to keep hands warm if you don't want to wear gloves or mittens, but not too practical if you need to flip someone the bird  ;P

Then, Layer #2

A pair of tights, with another pair of pants overtop. Fleece UA jacket... No wonder there seems to always be an endless pile of laundry!  BodyGlide on my cheeks, lip gloss for my lips...

Finally, outside and ready to go...
I had 8km on my schedule for today, almost headed turned towards home at 7.5km, but felt great, was warm, and happy!  I decided to swap the two days and do my long run today, and will run 8 tomorrow instead.  15km slow run (longest run since my injury return YAY!)  Breathing was easy, perceived effort was also easy, but heart rate was high. Hmmm. Even while walking in an effort to bring down my HR, I was in my aerobic zone. Max HR showed 204 bpm, which I think is a false reading, because I certainly wasn't running hard enough or fast enough to have my HR go that high.  I haven't seen 200+ bpm in a long time, even on my much faster runs (comparatively to the runs I've been doing lately), so I don't think it was to accurate today for some reason.
Yep, they froze -- well, a pretty thick slush anyway...  Nice eh?  I didn't pass one runner out there today, although I saw a few pass by the house when I was already done.  I felt hardcore being out there today, and super happy to have run outside rather than on the TM.  How's that for a Canadian winter Kim? LOL

Frozen bottles! I think maybe that's a sign that it's possibly too cold to run outside, layers or not!

Wow! You are tough. I don't run outside if it's cold enough my bottles will freeze in the time I'm out there.

OH!! MY!! GAWD!!!
I was coming to your blog to tell you Reggie told me it was like -24 degrees below up your way. I have to stop calling him Reggie, he goes by Reg!

Frozen hydration bottles. No thank you!!!

I've done a few runs where my water froze. Not surprised your HR was up. Trying to run at all in that type of cold is hard, the body is working to keep warm.

I guess this makes you hard core.

Gotta love the days when you do something that makes you feel so proud of yourself. You get others to admire you also.

Just gotta ask my hardcore fellow cold winter runners...any suggestions on how to keep the sunglasses or my regular prescrips from fogging up from the hot breathing???? Halfway through my runs I have to take them off and just hope for the best that I can see traffic coming at me!
Nice job on layering!

nice job on the long run in cold weather...can't believe your drink froze, that's hilarious...I like it to be at least double digits with windchill to run....hardcore, indeed.

frozen bottles = stay inside :)

my goodness if i lived in canada i would be 300 pounds heavier and inactive. i just cannot imagine running in such insane temps. knowing that you head out day after day in beyond freezing temps helps get me out the door when i am being a wuss about 20*f temps!

I don't even bother bringing fluids with me anymore on my runs. I just hydrate myself up+++ before hand and when I get back.

Good job in the cold - you are so hardcore! I feel like a wimpy west-coster not wanting to run in -4 this morning....

I hate this weather. You are one tough chick. Great job.

At the risk of being repetitive (too late), you are one tough lady. I ran in +5°F last weekend and that was cold but -22°F? Wow!

WOW. Hardcore, or just nuts? ha-ha! You rock! :-)

I'm not understanding the HR thing again.
What do you use to check your HR?
One way to see if the HR is correct is to check the old-fashion way.
Check your pulse over your carotid artery(neck) or radial artery(wrist). See if the HR is real.
Either way, good run!

All I can say is... You are ONE TOUGH COOKIE!!! There's no way you'll catch me doing anything physical outside this winter, which is why I'm glad I finally got my treadmill! Woke up to -46 F this morning... I cannot even IMAGINE! You're a nut, but a dedicated one!! :)
