I did a 30 min spin on my bike at lunch, kept my avg. at 153 bpm.

Then I had to shovel.
☃ Ugh. There is nothing like the sound of my shovel scraping along the driveway over and over, then the sound of my neighbor starting his snowblower...sigh.
Since I've been focusing on HR lately, I thought it would be funny to wear the Garmin just to see where my HR was at. It looks like I let a 2 year old scribble on a map with a red pen! LOL Anyway, HR avg. was 149, and about 324 calories burned. See what you Southerners are missing -- this wonderful opportunity of burning calories?! ya right.
Ok, now onto the run. It was already dark after karate, so I had a bite to eat with the little man, dropped him off at home, then headed over to the gym. I was aiming to keep my HR somewhere between 113-156 bpm, my aerobic zone. Treadmill is in kph! This is the first one I've found since using treadmills that is in KM rather than miles! Started at 5.0 kph, Garmin beeped that my HR was too low. Good.
Increased to 5.5 kph, Garmin still telling my HR was too low, increased incline to 1%. Got up to 6.4 kph, but had to lower it to 6.3 a few times to lower my HR slightly; I was the high end of the zone, hitting anywhere from 151 to 156 bpm. This was a comfortable, easy jog, not a run. While breathing was easy, I still broke a sweat, so I was pleased. I think it was about 4.5km in just under 43 minutes (between the TM, Garmin and Nike+ I had 3 different distances and varying times... so I took an estimation). Average HR was 153, max 158.

I am more curious to see what my pace will be when I get outdoors. If all this snow materializes as shown in the forecast over the next 9 days, it may be a while I get a run outside! Is it spring yet?!
Stretched after my run, then an H2O massage, I think I almost fell asleep.
So far so good. ☺

Interesting. I'll be watching your experience. YOu are totally motivating me to figure out my HR monitor LOL.
Great job. I should try to use my HR monitor more. I am soo lazy with that!
That's a pretty high heart rate shovelling snow. Never thought it would be such a good workout! :-) You can put your gym membership on hold for a couple of months and save some money ...
Nice titular poem, Sistre, but it seems a bit unfinished:
Run one is done
Though it was no fun
Lucky for me I'm no vomiter!
I'd be all smiles
If I just ran in miles
Instead of these f*ckin kilometres!
I learned things here today. Before this post, I thought all satellites just skipped Canada, on the pretty solid assumption that there was nothing much going on there. I stand corrected.
Also, I learned that some people - women mostly - mean something VERY DIFFERENT when they refer to their "little man". When I refer to my "little man" in my posts, I want to assure you I'm NOT talking about my son. I don't want anyone calling the authorities.
Also, "titular", above, does NOT mean what you Canadians probably think it does. So don't call the authorities about that, either.
Finally: Does Canada have any authorities?
Good job on the workouts, Sistre! And congrats to Terron! Teh 'Bride and I were trying to get Ian interested in karate classes, but no luck so far ...
I should be checking into the HR thing one of these days. I'm just so impressed with my distance right now, but I need to figure out if I'm actually doing myself some good! Congrats for your son.
Too funny about your Garmin!!! Love the map! Way to go on your first run, I'm a little jealous! I may have to workout tonight to keep up with all of my blogger friends who have started.
We all should be using our HR monitor more. I think it plays an important role in the effectiveness of our training.
You keep mentioning "slush" in your weather there... I don't think I will see slush until April. LOL.
I love the map. I've used my Garmin for mowing the lawn.
Nice job! Oh, and I am so glad I don't have to deal with snow and shoveling anymore!
You're so tech savy with the HR monitor. I need to get more serious about this, too.
Thanks for the nice comment on my last post. :-)
Your map cracks me up!
Glad the run went well.
ROFLMAO at the map! That's too funny! I'm interested in knowing how this whole HR works out for you as well ;-)
Great job on your first official run of HR training! It will be interesting to see what kind of difference you see outdoors as opposed to treadmill.
Big congrats to T!!!!
I am one of those southerns who hates to shovel snow. Since I moved to the DC area, I have shoveled more snow than I care to think about. However, it is a great work out.
Go Terron! That's so cool. I really like the idea of belts with karate. Shouldn't runners get them too? Wearing a Garmin while shoveling snow definitely should get you your next belt. :)
Yay Terron. Nice job on the disciplined HR workout.
If you shovel MY driveway next time it snows down here, I will be your best friend.
Wow... we are thinking alike!!
I actually found my pace to be on target with Zone 2 level running. What did surprise me was that my pace was even throughout the run. Normally I speed up and slow down...over and over... this is not effective and I waste too much energy. Very weird not knowing my pace or distance until I am finished with the workout but I really feel like I am on track.
As for your snow... I am jealous!
Very cool. I will be watching your heart rate training.
Hahahahahah I love the garmin map of snow shovelling. :-)
i love the snow-shoveling map. of course i looked at the map first before reading and i'm thinking - what kind of workout is this? how do you run that kind of route? :) and i am not quite jealous of the snow-shoveling workout.
way to stick in your 'zone'! for me, my hr seems to jump up higher on the tm than outside. i tell myself it's because of the warmer air that hangs around me on the tm, and because you can't really slow down for a few strides or so like you might outside. that's my reasoning anyway.
I like the scribbles from your Garmin!
