so if not the North Pole, perhaps the Sahara?

Last week, I found and posted a video about running a marathon in the North Pole... many of you, like me, couldn't or wouldn't do it.  And as Leana said, it's certainly not a Boston Qualifier! LOL  So how the opposite extreme? Does this appeal to you more?  Are you as brave as Bruce saying that you'd rather run in a desert?!

After posting that video, I was contacted through my blog and told about a documentary called "Running the Sahara". It's a film narrated and executive produced by Matt Damon that chronicles an attempt by three ultra marathoners, including Ray Zahab from Canada, to run across the entire length of Africa's Sahara Desert. Their goal is to run across six African countries, anticipating two marathons per day, for eighty days...without a day off.

I have a free download to give away!  If you're interested in checking out this movie (have/use iTunes and will use the download), post a comment about tell me what your dream marathon would be.  If money was no object, you were physically and mentally ready to run a marathon, could pick any marathon, where would it be and why? Is anything stopping you from achieving that dream? Add a comment, and I'll do a random drawing from those interested a week from today, Monday February 16th.

I have a bit of sad news though... while the video is available through iTunes, it's currently only in the US iTunes store.  I've been told, however, that it will be available for the Canada store in the next month or two. So for the moment, this little giveaway is only open to my US friends.  The only thing that I ask is that you post a review of it afterwards; I can't even get it and am interested in knowing how it is!  (For those in Canada, if you want to view the trailer, change the country at the bottom of the iTunes page to US, search for "Running the Sahara" and you can then see it there.)

Hope your week is off to a good start!

I absolutely loved this movie. I'd highly recommend you rent it when it comes out or pick it up when it comes to Itunes Canada.

If money were no object, I'd definitely do the original marathon--the Athens Marathon in Greece. You run the original marathon course and finish in Olympic Stadium. As marathons go, I don't know of a better one to do than the first one!

Hey Melanie
I loved this movie as well. It was heart wrenching to watch but so uplifting and inspiring as well.

Made me want to be a better runner!!!! Since i already viewed this film no need to include me in the contest!!!

If i could run any marathon i think perhaps Boston. So much history there and if i can run heartbreak hill, then GO ME!!!!

Amazing stuff. I wouldn't want to do that any more than running across the frozen wilderness though.

oh I've been dying to see that movie. Let's see I think I would like to run a marathon in like Australia!! Wouldn't that be cool to see a brand new continent via foot...yes I think that would be my big pic..sure as hell beats the north pole

I'd have to say Boston. But if there was a marathon that was run on paths of pine needles along the Maine coast, both my eyes and knee's might vote for that one.

Cool Mel! I think my dream marathon has to be Boston. At this point I am far enough away from qualifying that it is still a dream, but I hope one day it will be a reality!

North Pole. Sahara.

You cannt just run a normal marathon cann ya??

My dream marathon would be Boston. Because that would mean I qualified. so it will be a dream.

My dream marathon would be the one in Europe somewhere with the food/wine tastings for rest stops. I think they had a very generous cut-off time (to allow for participants to weave their way to the finish). Someone had blogged about it. I forgot the name, but THAT would be my dream.

How interesting! (No need to put me in the mix for the movie but...) My dream marathon has two flavors - I'd either love to go to New Zealand for the first time and run a marathon there or I'd like to spend all 26.2 miles running right along the coast of Northern California (like around Muir Woods).

All these stories of crazy marathons is getting me excited for the great wall. Considering it isnt the desert of the brutal temps of the North Pole, the mountains is what will kill me. Although I am neither mentally nor physically prepared for the race in May... I will be... :)

Ultimate dream - Boston. Money would need to be no object as I would have to pay out bribes to be let in at this point in my short running career.
The Great Wall of China marathon would be pretty cool as well.

Matt Damon got lambasted in that movie "Team America - World Police" and I always chuckle when I hear his name (even though I really liked him in the Bourne movies and the Ocean's series).

My dream marathon would be to retrace the original one from Marathon to Athens (I think). I just heard about the fact that they have a race on this route every year in Greece! I've never run a marathon, but someday I would love to run this one. Not only is Greece an amazing place to visit (I am a big ancient history fan, especially of Greece and Rome), but the feeling one would have running on this most famous of marathon routes would be hard to describe (though I'd post a race report, of course)!

Sounds like a great movie. At this point in my running career, running any marathon would be a dream. But NYC would be at the top of my list. Running a marathon in Italy also would be pretty dreamy.

No need to include me in the draw.

As to what would be my dream marathon, I can't really think of one as I think I already had it.

My parents currently live in a different province than I (Newfoundland) and this past Fall, they came to Nova Scotia (where I live) to watch me run the Valley Harvest Marathon. Having them there to watch means more to me than any other marathon I can think of - including Boston which I managed to qualify for in that race and will be running this year. Seeing them at Mile 22 and the finish line with my wife and kids whooping and hollering was just the lift my mental state I needed.

The funny thing is if the same question would have been asked to me 4 months ago, I definitely would have responded Boston. After running that race, however, Boston doesn't seem to matter as much anymore.

That sounds awesome!

I would love to run the marathon in Antarctica. It's booked for a few years out because they only let a few people do it... Dang.

How cool. I think I need to check it out. My dream marathon would be London. I lived there after college and would love to go back.

how cool!! don't know that i would do that extreme end of marathon weather either though... lol.

if i could do any marathon it would be.... the olympics!!! duh. the only small detail stopping me there is, oh right, i don't run a 2:20. for a full marathon anyway. ;-) but really, i ultimately dream of running in the olympic marathon. who knows maybe i can whack off another hour:20 and you'll see me in london 2012 ;-)
