i'm hesitant to post this... I question if I should just leave well enough alone, keep my mouth shut, and not jinx myself. But, as you all know, I can't keep quiet for too long. :)
This weekend was cold, but thankfully we escaped the latest dumping of the white stuff that is battering the east coast, all the way down in the Carolinas! The sun was bright, making it look a lot warmer than it was... deception. Saturday's 6k run was done on the treadmill, then a friends' wedding in the evening. The food at the wedding was scarce, and certainly not adequate for pre-long-run fuel. I was a little worried, and contemplated stopping on the way home to grab a bite to eat, but by the time we left, I had a vicious headache and wanted to sleep and get out of my heels -- running shoes are just so much more comfortable! LOL
My alarm clock went off at 6:20am, I thought it was a dream. Got out of bed, forced down breakfast with eyes half open, and drove to meet with my group.
I was dressed warm enough, except that my neck was a little exposed since I opted to wear a hat.
After a few steps, I sped away from the group to run back to the car to get my balaclava. Yes, it was that cold, and the wind was biting. I'm so glad I did. Our route took us straight north for about the first 7k, directly into the wind. Pace was slow to keep my HR down heading into the wind and a few rolling hills, but I was able to pick up the pace a bit with a tailwind. We stopping in a gas station to refill our frozen water bottles and a quick washroom break. I don't think the employees there took their eyes off me with the balaclava on. Quite certain I don't fit the profile of a robber going in there with 3 other girls, all with fuel belts and mostly frozen water bottles, sucking back a GU. LOL So much for the sweet innocence of being Canadian, eh Glaven?I think I'm starting to get a pretty good idea of nutrition, and how much I need during my long runs. I had a gel about every hour, which helped immensely. The other two girls that I was running with seemed to be bonking pretty hard near the end, and both gave me the evil eye when I asked if we were adding a loop at the end. Yes, I wanted to continue running, I had it in me!
While I thought yesterday may have been my longest run ever, I went back into my running log, and realized it wasn't. Yesterday's run was 26k/almost 16 miles, but in the summer before the fractures, I managed just over 27k... so pretty close. Average HR was 159 (zone 2), max 176 when sprinting back to the car. However, I think I hit my highest month of mileage in Feb with 135.1k!! :D
I felt great during my run, despite my cold, red and numb skin under the layers, and feel great today! This is important to me because in less than 30 days is that 30K race I wanted to run last year, but couldn't because of yet another injury. So with that, I will enjoy a rest day today and maybe head over to the gym for an H2O massage later this evening.
Hope you all have a wonderful week.

You SHOULD be feeling confident! You've been hitting some serious mileage lately and bonus that you're feeling good too! Congrats!
You are going to rock ATB.
Sounds like it was a great run. Nice job mastering the nutrition aspect. I still have no clue what to do about all of that. I bought some sharkies with good intentions this week but they sit, unused in the cupboard...
Awesome run! I have the same feeling walking into a store with the facemask on. The cashiers face is always shocked when I dont ask for all the money and actually purchase something, haha.
Good job showin the other runners who's boss!
Great run! You've had an amazing month. Hope you have a fabulous March!
LOL you're so cute!
CONGATS it sounds like it was a most excellent run. You ole gas station robber HAHAHA!
I'm sure the gas station attendant needed a highlight to his day.
Good job on all the miles (kms)!! Take a well deserved break today!
The balaclava story cracks me up. I always joke that it's my bank robbing/cold weather running gear.
Great job on the distance. You are sooo ready!
oooh that's kind of a shoutout. i even "shoveled snow" on the driveway today! thought of you of course.
great job on the long run, esp in the cold! too funny about the gas station. glad they didn't call the cops on you :)
You should feel great! There's nothing like knowing you could keep going after a long run. Great job!
great job on the run! I am LMAO about the gas station stop.
Sounds like it was an awesome run... Congrats!!!
BTW, I find putting a little bit of Gatorade powder in my water goes a long way towards preventing the water from freezing. I am not a big fan of gatorade, but on really cold days it does serve that purpose well.
If I had to wear a balaclava I can confidently say....screw that run. But I'm glad you got it in ya to do it! WOW!
You are rockin these days!!!!!
ok I keep saying i'm going to buy one of those but I haven't. way to go on a great run.
how is teh H20 massage? as good as a hands on?
As much as I am looking forward to warmer weather and no snow, I will miss runs in the winter cold all bundled up! Great job on the run!
Great job on the run! And, Great job on February's mileage!!
Nice work! Next time, make sure you're dressed in all black including the balaclava ... just to see what happens;)
TERRIFIC! Embrace your confidence! You've been working hard and deserve to feel confident!
Great job on the run AND your February mileage!
Keep rockin'!!
What a great run! WANTING to run another loop at the end? Wow.
I'm always a bit nervous when I meet another runner in a balaclava... :)
Great job on the run! Now I'm totally going to feel guilty if I wimp out and run on the treadmill tomorrow. LOL.
awesome job on the run!!!! you are doing so great :) sooooo happy everything is going well!
Good job on the run. How funny about getting the staredown at the gas station with the bakalava on!
Awesome mileage for the month Mel! And I love the trash talking - "Another loop ladies?" I hope you had a nice evil laugh following THAT little nugget. I like the way your brain works!
I just finished your last paragraph and had to say that you are so much better prepared for the Around the Bay than I am! Well done!
I'd never known what a balaclava was. Learn something new all the time! I think I take in nutrition more often than most - like every 50 minutes but it has helped my endurance SO much. Metabolisms are just varied, I guess since most people seem to take far fewer. Yay you for your highest mileage (kilometerage) month!!!!
... stopping in a gas station to refill our frozen water bottles .... I don't think the employees there took their eyes off me with the balaclava on. Quite certain I don't fit the profile of a robber going in there with 3 other girls.... So much for the sweet innocence of being Canadian, eh Glaven?
If this little episode had included the coda "And then we pull our gats out from under our jackets, held them sideways and screamed: 'Hit the floor, muthaf*ckas!! This is a stick-up, yo!'"
... Then, and ONLY THEN would I concede "So much for the sweet innocence of being Canadian".
But good job on the run anyway, you cute, harmless little Canadian!
Man, you actually said to those other girls, "How 'bout another loop?"!!1!
You are OG - Original Gangsta, Sistre!1!
Congratulations on your highest mileage so far. We have to plan a meet up for ATB!
Jinx? No way, just keep that rabbit's foot in your pocket. I think you're amazing to get in a long run in that winter!
Good run, Melanie. Sounds like you hit the hydration and gu'ing just right.
Congrats on a great run and staying healthy. I also ran 16 miles today in 5 degrees F weather! H20 massage sounds wonderful.
Awesome long run Mel!! Woohoo! runs like these are the ones that keep us going. You are going to kick some serious behind at ATB!
Wow! That is one serious cold-running head cover thingee! I've never seen one of those. Looks like it would do a good job at keeping you warm (as well as keeping store employees on their toes). Congrats on your long run... sounds like you were right-on in terms of fuel and hydration. :)
Sounds like a great run. I love it when you feel strong running and want to go farther! Have a great week.
I have a mask like that when I ride in the bitter temps on my bike. Some laugh but all I know is that I am toasty warm and they are frozen.
Love the runs when you don't want to stop. That is a high that is priceless.
Great JOB!!!
I shake my head in awe at you for running in the cold like that... I won't lie, I wouldn't do it. But I do LOVE reading about your adventures!
Wow Melanie! You are hardcore runner girlie!!
I think you are really on your way to a great 30K race!!! I am rooting for ya!!!
Great long run! I love all the crazy looks I get when I'm running around our hick town all decked out in my fuel belt and running gear. People think we runners are just nutso!
Far out! This is huge. 26 km and nutrition sorted. You will be so ready for that 30 k run, girl. Smokin' it! :-)
Unbelievable !!! I just don't know how you can do this in ass-kicking freezing temperature. Hat off to you for getting it done.
I had to laugh at the gas station incident. No question, I think the gas attendant was nervous. If it was me, I would be peeing in my pant.
Now, how many more days till spring?
