I've always been a gadget person, and love new technology. It's what I do for a living, and I use gadgets with my running, (especially with my new focus of heart rate training), so naturally it's a big part of my life.
I recently bought a Polar heart rate monitor; my first one. I've been learning the settings, the software, and how to use it. If you read my post from last week, where Marlene suggested that I was the neighborhood menace, it was obvious that I had done something wrong. :D

The Polar allows you to do a 'Fitness Test'. The following is taken from the manual...
The Polar Fitness Test is an easy, safe, and quick way to measure your aerobic (cardiovascular) fitness at rest. The result, Polar OwnIndex, is comparable to maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), which is commonly used to evaluate aerobic fitness. Your long-term level of physical activity, heart rate, heart rate variability at rest, gender, age, height, and body weight all influence OwnIndex. The Polar Fitness Test is developed for use by healthy adults.Aerobic fitness relates to how well your cardiovascular system works to transport oxygen to your body. The better your aerobic fitness, the stronger and more efficient your heart is. Good aerobic fitness has many health benefits. For example, it helps in decreasing high blood pressure and your risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. If you want to improve your aerobic fitness it takes, on average, six weeks of regular training to see a noticeable change in your OwnIndex. Less fit individuals see progress even more rapidly. The better your aerobic fitness, the smaller the improvements in your OwnIndex.
The first time I did this test, I scored a 35. Being female and age 31, this put me in the 'moderate' category.
Reading the manual further, I made an adjustment to a setting to my level of activity since I've been running 40+km/week, biking and packing to move... this counts as cross-training, no?
A few days after having made this change (even though I kinda forgotten about this setting change), I repeated the fitness test... and scored a 51, which is considered Elite! Pffft. So I redid it, same thing. Obviously something is wrong, but flattery will get you everywhere, and my morale could use a boost! I hope to see results from heart rate training, but didn't expect it to be so drastic and so soon! LOL
As bloggers, some of you often get contacted by companies to do product reviews, get free swag, etc. (I don't, but I'm not bitter... lol) Well, I was surprised on Monday to get an email from Chris at Polar USA in response to my "menacing" post asking if I got the settings fixed, and offered his help if needed!
I explained that the constant beeping was a malfunction user error, but also took the opportunity to ask him about the results of the fitness test, and a few other questions I had. He responded yesterday suggesting that the setting I changed last week was probably incorrect, and helped with my other inquiries! How's that for Customer Service! I was contacted as a result of my blog post, questions answered, issues resolved! If only it was that easy to deal with every company! Thanks again Chris!
I redid the fitness test this morning; I'm back to being 'moderate', but it was fun to be elite for a day, even if I didn't feel any different. :)

That's awesome how the company contacted you through a blog. I think that's the most personal touch to customer service. Makes me wonder who reads my blogs that I dont know about.
I love technology too!
Cool on the company contacting you through the blog! Gotta love technology.
That's really cool! Tell him you want to do some reviews for the company and see what he'll hook you up eith.
It's people like Chris that help Polar stay on top.
I currently use Polar and now after hearing this story will never change.
Nice! I may need to try out a heart rate monitor.
[I] love new technology ... for a living
Really? Here in America, it's illegal to "love" other humans for a living, but we definitely frown on f*cking machines!
Of course, it's a different culture up there, Sistre, so I'm not judging you! Whenever I get the urge to "integrate" with some circuits, I just take a train ride into Canada, where it's legal.
So I'm in no position to judge you.
Of course, I've never paid for it.
Now I'm judging you.
@ Glaven, wow, you really can pick things apart like no other :P
That's great that customer service contacted you! Congrats on being elite for a day!
That's cool to be contacted through your blog-I've never had the pleasure. Techno stuff is so hard for me, I like the basic watch-with a second hand!
That rocks...maybe we need to get out there and solicit free stuff??? I'm glad you had luck with Polar (I never have).
Wow...that is fantastic customer service!!! Yay for Polar! So glad you got your issue fixed.
I wonder if being in Canada affects the freebies. I've had two freebies, one because I posted about the product that I used. I was sad that I didn't get in on the ProWash or WIN since it seemed like everyone was getting it!
Awesome Polar has a great range of products, problem is I am locked into Garmin now!
Still being an elite for a day, very cool!
Packing totally counts as XTraining and I've got it all to look forward to at the end of the month!
I meant to say, you maybe not being contacted 'cos you in Canada, you're certainly getting the traction/visitors!
My Polar watch started giving me problems a couple weeks ago. It wouldn't upload my data to the website.
I never got around to doing the fitness test. Darn!
I still love my Polar, until I bought my new Garmin 405!!! Woot Woot!! I just wanted the GPS capabilities that my Polar wouldn't give me..
Right now I'm running with both watches to compare data.
Please, please let me know how I can make my watch malfunction so that I'm elite, too. :)
That's great customer service.. too bad all companies aren't like that.
Here's hoping you land some free stuff...
Like you, I am also a gadget lover, too! Its so much fun to toy with technology. However, I am more attached to my Garmie than ever when it comes to running. I have heard so much about Polar. I will look forward to hearing about your experience with Polar.
I think I need to start talking about products more on my blog. lol
That's some great service - I'm glad you got some answers. So, has the beeping stopped???
Keep the elite status, girl!
shoot don't argue with the machine!
you are still elite to me! :) how awesome of the polar man to help you out and go 'out of the way' to do so. so true that more companies need to be like that!
GIVE ME A TECH!!!
WOOHOO!
I love my garmin and i love all techie things!!!
SOmetimes though you want to tune out and just be one with nature!!!
Yeah right!!!
That's some great customer service!
I love tech stuff, but seem to be way behind the curve these days.
Im starting to wonder if some of these companys dont have someones job it is to just scan blogs looking for refferences the their products. And where do I get that job?
I love my Polar and even swim in it (even though you aren't supposed to). Nice customer service!
Cool customer service! Now hope on the basis of this post, your next Polar HRM will be free! wink wink
Clearly your readership is wider than you originally thought. Very cool!
Oh Mel...from one gadget-geek to another, I just completely LOVE this post. I smiled through the whole thing :-). I just appreciate your relentless pursuit of getting the technology to work (dammit!)
I think Chris regularly stalks runner's blogs (Hi Chris!) because I've read several accounts of his contacting the blogger with feedback, advice, help...it's a good strategy.
That's service. I've tried the OwnIndex thing several times over the years and it never changes for me, even though I know I've improved. I personally don't think it works that well. Hope you have better luck with it than I did.
That's so awesome! And I'd keep the elite status! You totally deserve it! I'm such a moron when it comes to technology. My way of trying to fix it would have been to turn it off and on over and over hoping that would solve the problem!
Great customer service! That says a lot for the integrity of the company.
I'd be afraid to see what the watch classified me as... does it have a "You Need Help" category?
Great blog! I believe in giving good feed-back for deserving companies.
Great story! If I weren't completely broke, I would so go out and buy a Polar something or other to support a company with that kind of proactive customer support! Yay you for being Elite for a day. :D
elite for a day? i'll take it.
Wow! How Cool!! What great Customer Service!
This weekend I think I might do the Polar VO2 (Fitness) test trying each of the 4 settings and see what I get!
I'll post the results :D
BTW Mel, when you posted a comment on my blog yesterday you input a URL, however it didn't work, I was re-directed to Bloggerspot site that said there was no such user!! - I thought you might want to know.
Hey, hey, hey! Who says peeps aren't checking? That's awesome CS for ya! Alright!
that is awesome that they contacted you!! glad you got it figured out, but still fun to be elite for a day :)
