Is this supposed to happen?

A day after the race, and I'm thinking about my next run and my next race.  Does this mean I'm a runner? LOL

So a few weeks ago, I mentioned a potential announcement/surprise.  Nope, not pregnant, not engaged, not a major lottery winner. :D

Let me start at the beginning. While stretching after our last long run leading up to yesterday's race in the community center, 3 of us were talking about the race.  One of the newer guys to join became the best salesperson I've yet to come across... better than any used car salesmen!

Not exactly sure how the conversation changed, but I came to learn that 3 of the group had already registered for the Mississauga Full Marathon. Where have I been? One is doing it as it's her birthday along with the "salesman" and the "speedy" one of our group.  By the end of the 10 minute long conversation, he had us almost convinced that we should register and run it too!  I went home, and spoke to Jay about it, but I also told him that I was putting it out of my mind until I completed the 30k. That was my one and only goal at the time. Once that goal was accomplished, then we'll talk about it.  I did spill my secret to one other person. ;)

So, it's the day after my race, we've since talked about it; during the car ride home from the race yesterday. The thoughts are running through my mind.  Remember in my race report I mentioned that towards the end of the race, I caught up to 3 runners -- the "birthday girl" and the "salesman" and another (will have to think of a nickname for him). As we ran down the finishing chute, salesman says "you've come this far, why wouldn't you register for the full?"

Training plans that I've been looking at usually go up to about 32k for full marathon training. This marathon is 40 sleeps away.  My ultimate dream goal (yes, it's "the ultimate dream goal", because I didn't even conceive the idea that I'd run a half, let alone a 30k) when I started running was to complete a marathon at 32... the same age my dad ran his.  I'll be 32 in August, so yes, I'd be a few months early...

Following is what is swirling in my mind -- there's a lot.
Pros
  • Mississauga Marathon is May 10th, Mother's Day!  How cool would it be to run my first marathon on Mother's Day, with my son there
  • Yesterday's 30k was not run for time, not full-out exertion, so recovery time hopefully shouldn't be too long. I only swore going down the stairs once today, hopefully tomorrow won't be too much worse.
  • Registration fees go up April 1st.  I'd like to beat the $10 price hike if I'm going to do this.
  • Local race, can drive to/from the race on the same day
  • FLAT!!!!  It's a net downhill. After yesterday's monster hill around the 25k mark, and hilly final 10k, I'm happy with a flatter downhill race :)
  • 2 of the group members running their first full, another running the half (right Marlene?)
  • A fall marathon is not ideal and would be too much for me.  Nike HM in San Fran October 18th. Running Scotiabank at the end of Sept and hilly San Fran 3 weeks later scares me.  We will be booking flights fairly soon, as well as a house for the week, vacation time already booked from work, I want to be healthy to get the necklace from the firemen get to and finish this race.
  • With Toronto Waterfront Marathon the same day as Nike, and Niagara Falls International the week after, obviously neither of these are an option.
  • I accomplished 30k, do I really have/want to wait until next spring to try a full?
  • I don't know of any other full marathons between May and Sept, and with the summer humidity, not sure I'd want to run one in the middle of summer.  Traveling a distance for one is not an option, as I'm already traveling later in the year.
  • Obviously this would be another huge milestone; I'd go into this race with the same mentality as yesterday's race.  Go out, have fun, no expectations, no time goal, just finish.  After yesterday, I know that I have the mental capability and strength to do this.
  • Didn't register for Nike Full because all of the other girls signed up for the half, traveling home within a few days following, and a very hilly course
  • Checked the website, if I really really feel like I'm not ready, I can change this to another distance on race day, I can't do that with Nike
  • Did I mention this route would be flat?
Cons
  • Timing... currently registered for the Sporting Life 10k on May 3rd (another extremely fun downhill race... I'd run this for fun no problem).  Following weekend would be the full. May 31st, I'm already registered for the inaugural TO Women's Half.  Even if all these races are done just to finish, is it too much?
  • Is 3 weeks enough time after my first full to do a half?
  • Of course I'd want to finish the marathon injury free... but What If? Will I be ok having to miss the half that I I had already registered for prior to this crazy idea, and is already sold out if I'm not recovered or injured, or anything else that might come up in between?
I can't think of any other cons... honestly. I know this might seem like an easy decision given the lopsided list, but I am so SO happy to be 6 months with no injuries and feeling great. I want to keep it that way!

I was kinda hoping that this would be more of an announcement after having made a decision, but I'm really stuck -- so right now I'm begging for your thoughts, expertise, and opinions (be honest). The three from the run yesterday seem to have confidence in me, Jay says I should just register already -- why wouldn't I. Also chatted with an old co-worker today while talking about my race who is also a runner; he said to go for it. Yikes! What do you all say? Am I delusional? Great guess Arcane! :)

**A few things; it's NOT peer-pressure to hang with the cool kids.  I'm considering it because it's something I want to consider.  And, there's absolutely no rush to try my first marathon, but, well, you know... (see above).

Holy crap girl. You had so many thoughts going through your head and mine that I had to read your post 2 more times - haha
5 weeks of training w/ 1 week taper means 4 weeks, right?
10% increase per week for 4 weeks's = 30K + 3K + 3K + 3K + 3K = 42K!
Yes it is doable and it even gives you time for taper. Like my math, huh? Of course, listen to your body..

I don't know much about running and, yes, it sounds like a lot, but, hell, "Go for it, girl!". The ten percent rule that SuperDave above mentions exists in cycling, too, and it sounds reasonable. Just listen to your body as you go along. Maybe talk to a coach?

How exciting...May and October...I don't see why not. Enough time to repair and recover in between to me. What a Mom's Day gift!

You are right on track for Mississauga, YOU GO GIRL!!! Entry fees increase tomorrrrrrooooowwwww!

I see your list of "pros" is a lot longer than your "cons"!

GO FOR IT!
Your mentality is in perfect shape to get this done!

lindsay said...

go for it! :) you rocked the 30k. you could have a shorter-long run this weekend, two 18-20 mile runs in april (11th, 25th?) with regular long runs sprinkled in the rest of the weekends and taper down to may 10. your list of pro's doesn't sound like you could be talked out of it anyway ;-)

Do it!! You are ready for a marathon and you are running well. It sounds like you want to do it. Know that you can complete a marathon. Let us know what you decide.

GO FOR IT CHICA!!! I was going to say the same thing as Diana. The Pros def outweigh the cons! LOL

Denise said...

go for it! Plently of time in between and the pros definitely outweigh the cons!!

From the tone of your post, i think you WANT to do the full and so for that reason (and you are well on your way training wise from the 30K) I think you should.

But I think the 10K the weekend before is probably not a good idea. If you run it too hard you may mess up your marathon. It will take strong will to go easy on that.

Go for it!!

do it. do it. do it. do it. do it. do it. do it. do it. do it. do it.

yes do the full. it will make the half 3 weeks later seem insignificant. you've already been through the hardest part of the training, and are physically ready. and you've got enough time to get mentally prepared.

i trained for a full and then missed it, and i now i have to wait until june to get into another one. you really don't want to wait that long, much less next spring. it's just like starting from scratch again! this i know from personal experience, and it sucks.

now go sign up before they raise the price ten bucks! do it now.

RunningLaur said...

Yep, do it.
Good luck!!

Dave's maths has more or less nailed it, if you can maybe do another 20miler (33k?) in two weeks and then ease of by 30% and 50-60% tapering down you're be good to go. Run to complete not compete and you'll do great.

Heather said...

Go for it - you had such a good experience at the 30K, it will boost you into trianing for the full. Have fun!

Wow !!! After reading your post, I feel like my brain was going FAST FORWARD at a gadzillion lightning speed. I had to slow myself down and re-read your post a few more times. My anxiety level did shot up! LOLLL !!! Just kidding. Wow - you have a lot on your plates in term of which one you want to sign up for and the timing issues. I trust you that you will make the best decision to the best of your ability. Listen to your mind and to your body. Put your calendar out and use a pencil so you can do a lot of writing and erasing. (have plenty of eraser with you!) Use your judgement. No question, it is very exciting. If you are confident and comfortable, I say GO FOR IT. If you are uncomfortable, back out and add more time till you feel you are ready. That is the luxury that you can make of. There is one beauty in all of this.... free your mind and your feet will follow!

Late congratulations on a fantastic race. You are right, when a person the day after the race thinks about the next run it means that he/she is a real runner. And it also means that it was a very successful race.

You can do it!!

tfh said...

It sounds like a logical decision to me! I'm going to be one of those chanting, "DO IT!" Esp. since it's a local race-- the hardest part for me of my 1st marathon was the travel. (Well, OK, not the hardest part, but you know what I mean!) Looks like a no-brainer, almost!

Saface Macdonald said...

Pros totally outway the cons. I say do it! And a run on Mother's Day is cool!

Marlene said...

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! So exciting!!!

Definitely looks like you have some amazing pros...

My instict says to go for it! Your training has been going so well. I think you are well-positioned for a May marathon!

3 weeks should be enough time for a half that you run for fun...I ran a 1/2 for a PR 5 weeks after the full...

Good luck with your decision. I know it's tough and we'll support you no matter what. I'm rooting for you.

Oh, and yes, I'm running the half. I will be there with bells on at the finish if you go for it.

Hi Melanie,

I read running blogs for inspiration (no, I don't have one of my own). Way to go on the 30km! What an accomplishment!

If you are looking for other options in the S. Ont. area, there is the Niagara International Marathon, Oct 25. You do need a passport, as it starts in the US.

Nice work!
Jen

Never mind...I mis-read your post. Perhaps Niagara in the future.

You are going to do great. Rock it!!!

Just do it! dont over think it, just do it. You know if you werent going to you wouldnt of posted it anyways.

Wow Mel, quite the announcement!

So, for my two cents, I think you could definitely do the marathon. You've got the base built up that it would not be difficult. I'd do a shortish run this weekend at a really easy pace (maybe 14k?), then ramp up to a big weekend of 32k on April 18th. The Sporting Life 10K can be a part of your taper...just don't race too fast!

As for the TO Women's Half... That would be a good question. It depends how quickly you feel ready to run after the marathon. My gut feeling is that a half marathon may be a bit of a stretch that close to your marathon, but play it by ear.

Chad in the AZ Desert said...

I think it is an awesome idea! Completing the 30k the way you did is a great setup for a marathon. You might have to juggle your other races, but it will be worth it.

And as for the marathon being the ultimate goal, remember: there are ultras yet to do. ;-) Embrace your inner crazy! Do it!

aron said...

i say go for it!!! you just ran 30k, and could totally consider that a training run for this marathon, especially since you said you didnt go all out and are recovering quickly. as long as you didnt "race" the other races close to the marathon i think you will be fine!!! seems like its meant to be :)

Vava said...

It's funny, I also was thinking of my next race the day after ATB. I'm not nearly as sore as I thought I would be, so that's a good sign.

As far as your decision goes I'm not sure I can help, but I think if you listen to your body and your heart you can't go wrong. Just make sure the heart doesn't drown out the body or it might jeopardize the rest of the year as far as racing goes.

Vava said...

And Oh yeah - see you at the Sporting Life 10k (maybe)?

Gotta Run said...

You live once.... GO FOR IT!!!! You can do it if you put the plan in place now. DO IT!! :)

hehehe you are so funny!!!!!!!!!! wow CONGRATS on your 30k! personal distance record WOO WOO! i have to add you to my blogroll i also thought way back when i added you but alas i will go do it now! :) i am also in NO rush to run my first marathon, esp after the 20 miles... but we're that much closer! i am interested to see what other people tell you to do! :) how do your knees feel??????? mine are killing me!!!! that is really the only sore spot i have left. my hammies were tight but are quickly recovering...

Sorry, sistre, I have to recuse myself from this debate because, while I have the utmost respect for people who run marathons, I consider it - running a marry - kinda insane so you can pretty much guess what my advice would be.

That being the case, it's not really objective advice, then, is it?

Therefore: RECUSED!

Given how strong you ran your 30K - sign up, girl!

You can do a half 3 weeks after completing a marathon. In fact, it may not be a bad idea but otherwise, you'd get out of the habit (like a lot of people do post-marathon).

If you're not running the marathon for time, I think you can swing it. You'll just complete the distance, which I'm sure you can do with a couple long runs.

If you aren't feeling it on race day, cut it back to a half. That makes it easier.

And, there's something to be said for a local marathon. Waking up/going to bed in your own bed is huge. I'd say go for it.

RunToFinish said...

peeerrrr pressure. totally kidding, it's an amazing goal and honestly with as much as you do I'd say this is a mental challenge

Nicole said...

Best of luck in you decision. You'll make the right one.

Arcane said...

Well it wasn't that hard to guess. Anytime a runner announces that they have a big secret and things like pregnancy and marriage are ruled out, there's really only one other possible thing it could be! I would say go for it, though the second half of Mississauga has a lot of rolling hills in it, much like the ATB course, so it should feel familiar. You should be okay for the half three weeks after as long as you don't try to push all out for the half. Just my two cents.

Brian said...

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! I say go for it, the pros out weigh the cons, but you seem to have a good handle on both!

MCM Mama said...

Go for it! You are perfectly poised with your training, why waste what you've already done?

How exciting!

Mel I know you really want this. I know you really want to run this marathon so honestly I say go for it. Treat it as a fun run but put your best foot forward and get it done!! I am behind you on this my friend!!

Thank you so much for the link on getting back to running after an injury. It was really helpful for me!! I appreciate that chica!!!

If it helps, I'm running my marathon on May 9th and I'm doing the first of my 20 milers this weekend. It sounds like you are right on track mileage-wise to continue on to the marathon. Go for it!

You have very valid points on both sides...but in the end, only you know what's best for you. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Just follow your heart...and know that people believe in you! GOOD LUCK!!! :)

Woo hoo...a marathon! You are so focused about your training and you are a very sensible runner. Go for it!

I was just reading an article in last month's Runner's World about coaches who don't let their marathon runners go beyond 18 miles for their longest run anyway. You should be able to do the marathon.
