San Fran, here I come!

Thanks to AKA Alice for providing me a link to a searchable database of names, and for making my year! Oh, and all my running gals love you too! :)

I'm going to San Francisco!!! As you can tell, yes, I registered for the half -- not the full. I would rather have my first marathon be a little more flat, and perhaps somewhere I won't have to sit on a plane for 5+ hours  in the days following.

Met the running group last night for coffee, and of course we were talking about this trip. One lady's husband had scoped out houses for us to rent out for an entire week, making a week-long vacation out of it. Much cheaper than a hotel room, and we can all pretty much stay together.  How much trouble can 8 women get into in San Fran? ;)  I'm now officially doing a happy dance... 205 more sleeps!!

Bib number for Sunday's race is 3589.  Look like a good number?  I'm sure the high still won't have worn off by that point.

I have a question for you all.  One of the running group wants to run with me for the entire 30k. I'm going into this race as it being a 'fun run'.  No expectations, no pressure, milestone and PR regardless, I just want to finish; I have no care/concern about time. If I have to help them pick up the pylons as I pass them, I will. LOL I've never done a race planning to run with someone... I have no problems telling her to go ahead of me if I feel like I'm dragging her down, but don't want any hurt feelings if I feel like I want to go faster. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Not sure I'll have much to post between now and the race, so keep your fingers crossed for me! They're calling for 11℃/51℉, 90% of rain, 35km/hr winds.  Part of the race is on a bridge, metal grate; you look down, you see water.  I hate those things, and purposely walk around grates like that one sidewalks.  LOL With it raining, I'm sure it'll also be a bit slippery...  Let's hope the weather forecasters are wrong, or that it doesn't amount to much.  Have a great weekend, and good luck to all those racing this weekend, I know there's a bunch of us out there!

First off - congrats on getting into the nike half in san fransisco!!

do you WANT to run the 30K with someone? If not, just tell her no. If yes, why don't you set expectations with her by explaining what you posted - you need to agree that it's okay for one or the other to go on ahead without hurt feelings otherwise don't agree to do it.

I've run my halfs with my husband and told him to go on ahead three times. Twice he did, and the other time he stayed with me anyway. I'm sure he'd be okay with me going ahead (although unlikely THAT would ever happen). Anyway, I think it only works if you agree up front NOT to separate (and stick to it) or agree up front that it's OKAY to separate.

Good luck On Sunday. Looks like it's going to be wet and windy, at least it will not be so cold.

Congrats on the Nike 1/2! That's exciting. How much trouble can 8 women get into in San Fran? That's a loaded question!
Have a great weekend!

Congrats on the Women's Race - that's so exciting!!

Good luck at the race too - I'm sure once you're there, you'll barely notice the grate at all.

I'd tell the people that want to run with you that it'd be great if you happen to be at the same pace, but make it clear that if you're not, you'd like to run your own race. Both if you're faster or slower. You have to run it the way you'd like to - you're the one that put in all the hard work to get there!

Congrats!

As far as running with someone, I'd be careful agreeing to run with her. You don't want reality to come in and destroy her expectations.. I guess I'd just be very clear that you're going to run whatever pace you're going to, and hope she can stay at that pace.

I kind of take the approach that if I'm going to run with someone, we're going to go the same pace, no matter what. As long as we're on the same page, no worries.

Good luck on Sunday!

Congrats on your official confirmation for SF! I'm sure you'll be riding that high for 205 days and beyond. :)

I always have the same reservations as you when it comes to committing to running a race with someone. You never know how you're going to feel and I always like having the option of slowing down or speeding up as needed/wanted.

I would suggest making a deal that you start together but neither of you is obligated to stick around if you want to push harder.

OR, just tell her you kind of want to make this journey alone. Well, as alone as you can be among thousands of runners.

Good luck, Mel!!!

Hi Melanie! I recognized your pic from justfinish.com. Good luck in San Fran!

Congrats on San Fran!!!! Good luck this weekend. I say just agree beforehand that you'll run your own race, and if that is together then great but if you need to separate that's fine too.

Woohoo! That is so exciting!!!

Good luck this weekend. I am crossing my fingers your forecasters are wrong! You'll do great. And again I love your attitude! I think most runners won't be offended if, during a race, you say something like, "I'm feeling really good, so I'm gonna push it (or slow down) a bit" but if you sense the woman who wants to run with you would be hurt, just warn her ahead of time that it's not personal and whatever company you can give each other is appreciated (if it is). :) HAVE FUN and try not to think about the grates-- I hate those too!

Congrats on Nike and good luck on Sunday! You are going into the race with a great attitude, so I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience! Can't wait to read the report!

CONGRATS CHICA! WHOOOO HOOOOOO!!

As far as running with someone? As long as you both are clear on what the deal with pacing is :-) Running with friends is sooo much fun.

congrats on the officialness of san fran!! that will be so fun. :)

good luck this weekend! i think as long as you tell him/her that you are not sure of your pace and may pick it up/slow it down they can't hold it against you. it is a tough bit of etiquette to figure out though. just lay down the law and run YOUR race!

Whoo-HOO on SF! That will be sunh an awesome experience.

Good luck with the race this weekend. As for the partner thing, I would just be up front about it, letting them know what your intentions are and if they still want to run with you just let them know you are in it for fun! Looking forward to hearing about it.

Congrat's Chica on San Fran, you'll have a BLAST.

As for the ATB, start off together but run your own race. *you should do that for every run.

That way you won't feel obligated to speed up or slow down for anyone! There are enough people to hook up with throughout the run and you can drop them any time.

As for the bridge, you'll be fine, just don't look down and seriously if you hear the horn blast, take off across the bridge likity split otherwise they will raise the bridge and you are stuck there until it closes again. (happend to a friend of mine last year, he was not impressed).

Take your time, there are some beautiful homes to see on the other side of the bridge....take your time up the hill (don't be afraid to walk it if you have to) and give the Grim Reaper a big hug and have your picture taken with him, I want to see it!!

have a blast

hugs,
Lily

San Francisco sounds really exciting.

Just make it clear to your running partner ahead of time what you intend to do so they don't have any expectations for something more. You are not their pacer, so don't feel obligated to be one if you don't want to.

Yay for SF!!!!

I agree w/what Lisa wrote about running with someone. Don't do it if you don't want to. If you, be up front about everything.

Have fun!!

CONGRATS ON MAKING IT OFFICIAL, sistre!

Good luck this weekend, too!

I try not to make a habit of disagreeing with Teh Marcy, but I absolutely loathe the mere notion of running with someone else.

Just Say No. Just Do It.

Full disclosure: I am a misanthrope, though. I don't even want someone else around when I have sex.

Perhaps I've said too much here ...

CONGRATS on nike!!!!! :) :) I hope I am around that weekend to come cheer all the runners on!!!

GOOD LUCK this weekend!!! you will do great!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Regarding running with someone in a race: if you think you might want to start out with her then definitely do it. Just lay some guidelines before agreeing to race together. The ones that you mentioned, if either one of you feels the need to speed up and the other doesn't, then no hard feelings. After all, it's a race and everybody has their own agenda as far as how they want to run it.

I have a running partner who is also my racing partner. It's rare, I know. We race very well together. Usually in the latter stages of the race she undoubtedly pulls ahead. We've talked about all of this beforehand and it is never a problem.

Communication is key!

Have fun this weekend. Good luck!

8 women can get into HEAPS of trouble in the city...even if they're taking it easy before the race.

Congrats on getting in. I'm insanely jealous.

As for this weekend? Run your own race. If someone wants to tag along, no probs. If she pulls ahead, let her go.

Have a great weekend. 30K? Wow...

Missy said...

Luck, luck, luck...and run YOUR race at YOUR pace and if they can hang, you're good, if you can hang, good...otherwise, all bets are off.

How fun will San Fran be...you will have a ball.

Congrats on getting into the SF Half. It's supposed to be a great race. If you haven't already, take a look at vrbo.com for house rentals. Got a really good deal there a couple of years ago.

As for running with someone for the 30K, I said go for it as long as you give her the ground rules ahead of time. As in that you're just looking to finish, may not be fast and may need to tell her to go ahead. If she's good, then I say, go for it.

Good luck!

Nikemom said...

Run faster and maker her catch up to you. ;D If I run with someone, I make it very clear that you go your pace and I go mine.

Good look and congrats on the San Fran 1/2. :D

Sounds like it will be a great trip! I think your bib# for this weekend is a good one - at least it's "faster" than mine (3671)!
Ha!

Here's hoping the rain forecast is wrong.

So much excitement with the race and getting into SF! I'm sure if you just talk about each other's expectations ahead of time, both you and your friend will have a fun race. Good luck!!

Woo hoo for Nike!! You will have such an incredible time. And good luck this weekend. I think everyone's said what I would say - but as long as you're clear with this would-be running partner up front, I think it'll be fine. Enjoy your race!

Yay for getting into the Nike Half!! A week in SF sounds like a great time.

As for whether you should run the 30K with someone else... I would tell the person ahead of time what my expectations are. Unless she's mentally unstable, I'm sure she will understand. :)

I Run for Fun said...

Yay Mel. That's such wonderful news! And a vacation week with 8 gals? Can't be better!

I would have that conversation with the person before the race. You've invested so much into this race...you should be able to run it whichever way you want. Have a blast, girl!

YAY! and good luck this weekend! Have fun!

Congratulations! The vibe is incredible! I did the Nike half in 2007.

I didn't get in this year, but there's always a plan b...

MadeUpName said...

This one's easy for me, but then I'm pretty blunt :D

First off decide if you want to run with the person. If the answer is no, then you should say so. If the answer is yes then you're all set.

It's not fair for someone, no matter how well you know them to just "announce" that they want to run with you.... it would have been better all round if they had asked!! - Above all don;t feel bad about their feelings, cos they clearly had no thought for yours, LOL.

If you do decide to run together, you might want to agree around what circumstances during the run that may make you split up.... such as pace etc.

Good luck in the race

"I left my heart in San Francisco" - (singing) Who sang that song? I think I did left my heart in SF. Im jealous. Please take me. I will be your official supporter/photographer. Hee hee. I am tickled that you are heading to SF. One of my favorite city in North America !!! If I have a million dollars, I would want a home right on the top of the hill with a remarkable view of the city, Golden State Bridge and the Bay.
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A BLAST TOMORROW !!! (((hugs)))

Yay San Francisco!! When you run by Ocean Beach think of me...that's where I used to live and run! Well, I didn't live on the beach, but about a block away.

I thought of you yesterday during the time I thought you'd be running the 30k (I may have been off...stupid time change and all). I can't wait to hear all about it! Stop whatever you're dong and get to blogging!! :-)

I know Im too late to give you an answer youre looking for since you finished the race! It would be up to you whetehr you wanted to go faster, and I think the person asking to run this with you would understand.
