Back to the doc on saturday, and as she was moving up my calf along the bone watching my face to show signs of pain, her expression also eventually changed. Her forehead wrinkled, nose scrunched, lips pursed, and she said we're more than likely dealing with stress fractures again. I've had that feeling, but to hear it makes it more real. Again, we're not going to bother with the bone scan as I'll be aglow permanently if I keep injecting radioactive materials into my body, I've just made the promise to listen to the docs and take as much time off as needed to heal.
She suggested that I dig out the air cast/walking boot that I used for my last round of stress fractures, and try that for 3-4 days because my progress of treatment seems to have plateaued; I'm not feeling any better, pain remains the same, calf muscles equally tight, walking is still uncomfortable.
Went down to our storage unit, found the boot which I had hoped I'd never see or need again -- it was horrible. Last time I had stress fractures, relief was immediate when walking with the boot, but this time it was intolerable. Problem is that where the boot ends (slightly below the knee) is exactly where the tenderness of the probable stress fracture is, so it puts pressure with each step. It also constricts my already cramped muscles, making walking even more painful. So the air cast is out.
I go back tomorrow evening, hoping to get the ok to at least ride or swim soon.
Hope you're all having a good monday, I need to get some work done, and will be heading over to the gym later for some weights.

NOOOOOO! That is not the news you wanted. I am sorry. I hope the boot helps. Take it easy and you will be back running soon.
So sorry to hear about the stress fracture. But, you'll get through it and hopefully, you'll be able to bike and swim. Keep us updated. Hoping all goes well.
:-( sad face. boo.
The bike is a good thing! Let it become your friend and the running will not even enter your mind until it's time to do it! ;-)
I feel sad for you. That is truly sucky. And this time the boot doesn't even help.
I hope your appointment tomorrow goes well and that you are given the OK to swim and/or ride soon.
Get better soon!
That's such a bummer. I really hope you find some relieft very very soon.
That stinks! I hope they can provide something to help ease the pain since the boot doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
Dude! Total bummer!! Good for you, though, for promising to take the time to let yourself heal! Hmmm...I'm sure there's a lesson I should be learning from that statement...
Hope the doc gives you the OK for some sort of activity! Take care!
Mel, I am so very sorry!!! That sucks! there is nothing else I can say!!
Take care of yourself and you will be back at in no time.
That just sucks! Hope they can figure something out since the boot doesn't seem to be helping this time.
Hang in there!
Mel I'm so sorry that's definitely not what I was hoping to read about. I focused really hard thinking about you on mile 23 of the Vermont City Marathon. I hope that makes you at least smile. So sorry about the stress fractures and hope the doc can find you some relief asap!
Gr... that is terrible news. Do they have any idea how long a stress fracture takes to repair, or when the doctor can say for sure that's what it is? Gr.... Thinking of you :)
boo! i am so sorry that this is what they found! :( maybe we should rescue you, whisk you off for a lazy relaxing week (or two) in the caribbean, and you will be healed by the surf, sand and sun. sound good? :)
hope you are able to figure something else out in lieu of the boot. thinking of you lots!
Sorry to hear this, Sistre!
But, pfftttt! Silly stress fracture!
It couldn't take you outta the game for long last time. What makes it think it will be able to this time.
Stupid stress fracture!
Oh boy, gah, when the mind wants to GO, the body says NO! So sorry to hear this. One day at a time, one day at a time, sigh....
Stupid boot!!
Go swimming, it is cool and relaxing, and a good workout, followed by a visit to the hot tub and the steam room.
Feel Better Soon!!
Awwhhh man chica! I'm so sorry to hear this :-( What a bummer.
This is not what I wanted to hear. :(
Not good news... especially if that damn boot is not even offering any relief!
Good luck at the appointment tonight.
Dang it!! I was hope, hope, hoping it would be something better than those pesky stress fractures! BUT you sound like you have a great attitude and a solid commitment to healing all the way through this. Stay connected to your runner self and your runner buddies even while you can't run, ok?
Oh no Mel!!! I was really hoping that you weren't going to have to deal with that again. Hugs your way and sending you speedy healing thoughts. :(
Well, that's not good news. That's really terrible. Feel better, keep your head up.
Ooh, that stinks! Hang in there, make sure you rest it and heal properly.. You'll be back out there.. I'm sure of it.
Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear it's a stress fracture. I hope you heal up quickly!
Oh, so sorry to hear that it is a stress fracture. Hugs. I really hope you heal fast and can get back out there soon.
Must have been so hard to dust off the air cast...makes me sad just thinking about it. Hang in there!! I sure hope that the pain goes away soon..
