our running game

Ever notice that you "see" more of something when it's something that interests you, or that you like? I remember when I had purchased my first car, and was waiting for delivery, I then saw that brand of car everywhere... even though they seemed invisible before.

Weather is beautiful now, and all the fair-weather runners have decided to come to life once again... and now that I'm not running, they're everywhere!

Our game started last year when I was injured, but until recently I forgot how much we laughed about it... which is always a good thing. Gotta find something to turn this situation into a little fun. We were sitting in the car, girl running on the road towards us, shorts, tank top, a pony tail, hair swishing from side to side -- could describe me, but that time it wasn't, so I put on a bit of a pouty face. Jay noticed, and asked what was wrong, and I said I too wanted to be running. He responded by saying she wasn't running... she left her ipod somewhere and was going back to get it. Gotta give him credit for creativity.

Like an old friend, we started right where we left off.. During a car ride Monday night, the guy we saw wasn't running, Jay explained that was trying to lose his shadow.  Girl #1 was scary looking, so he said she was trying to run away from herself, and girl #2 was apparently late for dinner and was trying to get home before her family ate it all. The older gentleman we saw on sunday night... he claims the poor guy had a bad case of runner's poo.

Think he'll be this clever in 5 weeks?

Last night I had another appt with the chiro. I let her know that the boot wasn't gonna work since it ends precisely where the stress fractures are, and that pain seemed to be getting worse everyday. She gave me the crutches from the clinic once again and wants me on them for a week or two. This will ease the amount of pressure on my leg, giving it more of a chance to heal, which likely isn't happening as I'm walking limping around. She also found 'a knot and a half' in my calf, sneaky bugger has been hiding pretty deep and has managed to escape the treatments until now! Seems to have finally provided a bit of relief, and at this point, I'll take it!  I've gotten the ok to swim, although she thinks I'll still have pain given the muscles that hurt (front and back of the leg), and still no biking.  I've gotten my copy of the TriPower book that was recommended to me, and will dive into it today.

Been alternating between using Traumeel and Voltaren, two different topical creams with anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties -- not sure they're doing much for the amount of pain I have, but I'm willing to try almost anything!

I've booked an appointment for tomorrow night with the Sports MD that I dealt with last year with the stress fractures just to get his opinion and to see if there's anything else I could/should be doing.

Love the running game!

Hope things start feeling better soon and that you can get lots of swimming in!

I played the 'cycling game' when I was off the road for 5 months.
What is the Tri-Power book that was recommended?

That game is too cute!! Ha. Made me giggle.

Ouch! So hope you're feeling better and pain-free soon.

Your game cracks me up. Funny my friend and I were talking about the same thing on my run this weekend. When you are pregnant you notice pregos around, when you want to buy a Jeep there are jeeps everywhere, it goes on and on. The awareness of things totally changes based on your focus.

FYI I was not running 18 miles my car was out of gas and I really needed to get to the mall.. (OK that is all the creativity I have today, JEESH)

What a great game. Think I could come hire him to make me feel better about all the crappy stuff in my life?

Kudos to Jay for keeping you laughing! He's going to have to get REALLY creative in the coming weeks. :)

You're such a good sport, Mel. Honestly, I'd be burying myself in a hole. Your attitude truly is inspirational.

You're probably sick of hearing "hang in there"... but hang in there! Good luck with the sports doc.

Jay would have no problem with me because whatever it is I'm doing out there, it sure doesn't look like running!

Jay: "O, that guy. He's not running. He seems to be doing some sort of n*ts@ck dance."

Hahahahaha!

Take care, sistre!

Love that game. Since I run pretty slow, the kids love to see someone that looks slower and say, you could beat that person, mom. Doesn't happen often, but love when it does. I hope the crutches speed up the healing and that the pain stops!

Now that is a good game. I like it! And OY about the calf issues and stress fractures. Hang in there, that is crazy they just found that knot. Hopefully things will start working themselves out of your leg now. Here's to healing my friend!

you're going to love tri power. i'm going to spark up today's tri power workout in just a few minutes. those knots and things will get taken care of soon enough.

and you have GOT to love the canadian health care system. email me if i'm wrong, but in the american health care system we would only get about half of the treatments that we needed and it would cost around $3000 if you had good insurance. seriously, i would love to know what you think about your doctor visists so far. i've been on a kick for universal health care lately.

I keep hearing about this Tri Power thing. You've gotta give us the dish when you read it ;-)

OK, Jay, he gets a double thumbs up for trying to cheer you up. I guess he's a little young for - she's trying to run from menopause. That's another goodie!

I never had much luck with Voltaren cream either:(

Let me know about TriPower, though!

Love the runner's game.

Hope the swimming goes okay and it gives you some outlet until you are okay to run and bike again!

Love the game! What a nice guy to notice when you need cheering up and being able to make you laugh. That's a KEEPER quality!

I'm sorry you are still in so much pain! Keep being patient... you will be running again one of these days.

Sounds like a fun game! I know crutches stink but hopefully they help alleviate the pain.

Hey Mel

Tough going . . . arrgghhh!

Just wanted to let you know that Traumeel also has an oral tablet for anti-flammatory and pain. Called the same but its a little box with bottle of 50 tablets for about $15 - I know you can get it in Loblaws stores in the Natural/organic section where the natural products etc are. I can't find it in the "superstores" just the "Loblaws".

Other than everything you mentioned, you're great, right?! Keep up the great attitude and sense of humor. Good things come to those who wait. I know, I stole that from someone, and it's easy for me to say since I'm still running!! Good luck with everything, and I'm rooting for a rapid recovery for you.

Jay's sweet. Love the running game!

Jay is soooo creative!! What a total sweetie!! (You too of course.)

Tripower? I'll check this out too.

Swimming is nice to break things up, and you'll still be training! I love it!

Keep going Mel. The recovery road is often a long and torturous journey. I do believe that swimming will be the first sport that you will eventually be able to do pain free..... so keep at it.
