saving myself

Less than a week to go!  This race was like my safety net.... a race before the big one!
Today I ran the Sporting Life 10k... planned well in advance of even contemplating a marathon. Given the calf lately, and timing, I was focused. Determined not to get caught up with the adrenaline. Firm about this being a training run... just with 12,000 other people. Committed to testing out the leg, and hoping to build a little confidence.

Took more than 8 minutes for me to cross the start line, and I successfully lost the other 8 people from my group. I hadn't planned to meet up with them post race either, as I had a baby shower to attend in the afternoon, so I was going to "attempt" to leave quickly, more on that later.

Before hitting the 2k mark, I saw another girl from my group, so I darted over to where she was walking as I was a little concerned. She's been having issues with her foot, and was having a bit of difficulty breathing. Surprised to see me, she told me to go.  I chose not to, I felt it was better to hang with her, even though she tried to convince me she was ok.

Took a minute to snap a few pics when she was using the porta-potty... I avoid those unless it is an emergency.

I told her that we were going her pace, whatever she needed. I was there for the company, and to get in one last longish run on a gorgeous day before next weekend. Oh ya, and get a new shirt and medal ;) Plus this is a fun downhill race down the middle of Yonge Street, once in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest street in the worldAs you can tell from my heart rate trace, most of my time was spent in zone 1 & 2, barely into zone 3. So I accomplished what I had set out to do... treat this as a training run, and she was very appreciative.

The race course changed slightly from last year, specifically the end.  It finished in Fort York. If I had time to sit there after the race and enjoy it, then it would have been great, but I had to hustle outta there to get home and ready for the baby shower, an hour away from my house... there's something about this weekend, the Sporting Life race and showers, I had to bolt for a wedding shower last year right about the race too!

This is where it all slowed right down... once past the medal pick up and the food tents, we were slowly shuffling forward, all being corralled through a narrow chain link fence, along another path, through another small fence, and finally freedom -- one of the girls in our group commented that a fort is intended to be difficult to get into or out from! LOL Once out, it was another 3 or 4 km to hit the subway station to ride back to our cars.  Ugh.  Thankfully I wasn't in a rush... oh crap! I was!

Sure I could have taken a cab, or found a bus or street car, but the group managed to all be together at the end, so we all shuffled together. :)  Great day for a run!

Congrats on doing the run in the right zones and helping a friend at the same time. That has to be a great feeling. I love your picks of the shirt, number and medal. I'll have to try that after my next race. It's a nice keepsake.

Great job on taking the race slowly.

I'm so jealous of the medal. Very few races around here do them.

Looks like a really fun race - and the perfect pace for the week before your marathon.

Fantastic job! Sometimes it's better to run with a friend than to race all out.

Great job Mel! I ran too Mel as a training run.. started in the same corral. I found the distance off, did you? Anyway I guess it doesn't matter its all gravy for the main event, Mississauga!! I officially registered today for the full! Maybe I can finally meet you at the expo? Let me know! Congrats again, so nice of you to support your friend.

Congrats on a great training run Mel. You're gonna rock it next weekend.

So...here's my other random comment. I can't believe how unbelievably, freekin' CLEAN your streets are! I've been to Canada a couple of times, and that's the thing that I'm struck by...in a huge city the size of Ontario that there's no crap in the gutters, no trash on the side of the road. It's amazing! I ran through downtown San Diego this morning. I can't even begin to tell you about all the crap I saw.

You are a real and wise runner because it is not easy to plan and to run a race slowly even if the next week you have to enter "the main event". Thanks for the beautiful pictures.

A 10K run with 12,000 people?! WOW! Hey, nice job keeping your friend company. Nice pics also. Slow and steady completes the race anyhow! Next step: Marathon!

Hey M - looked like the weather you had yesterday was even more spectacular than the weather I dealt with. Don't get me wrong, I love TORONTO !!! It is one heck of a GREAT city.

Way to go for sticking with your buddy. I like that... a race before the big one. I am glad you took it nice and slowly.

((((hugs)))))

Congratulations! Sometimes I think it's takes more mental strength to pace yourself in a race than to set a PB. I'm sure your friend appreciated the support and it worked out great for you with the big one next weekend!

It was totally congested at the finish line when I went through and I imagine it only got worse. Funny about the Fort York comment! LOL

This post reminds me of my Canadian friend, Reg! He stuck with me so many times. You are a wonderful person Mel, and not just because you stayed with your friend.

Good luck with your first marathon! Keep that great perspective and you'll not only finish, but you'll have a fabulous time with sweet memories of the first marathon!!!!

Way to be a guardian angel, sistre!

You got in a nice easy race in prep for the biggie, and got to help someone, too.

That's a good weekend, in my book.

Then you had to go to a showre, which is where, if it were me, the weekend could be said to have gone in the crapper.

But it's not me - it's you and I bet you liked the showre, didn't you?

Man. You're such a girl!

Baby Showres! uuuhhhhhhhggg!1!!
