we are all unique

...yes, another lesson learned; once again, the hard way.
Demotivator Poster Unique - Just Because You Are Unique it Doesn't Mean you are Useful
Saturday I had another treatment on my leg, and was with another chiropractor/ART doctor. I've been going to this clinic for a few years now, started out with one doc, who is a friend of ours, and is great. But recently, he's reduced his hours due to other opportunities, so it's been difficult to get in to see him. I trust all the doctors there, so I've been ok seeing any one of them, and in recent weeks, have seen almost every doctor there given mine and their schedules! Jay's been dealing with a grade 2 tear in his hamstring (yes, we're both falling apart -- thankfully the kids have been so helpful!), so we laughed that we feel like the clinic sluts... seeing anyone who happens to have an opening :)

Saturday was my first visit with Dr. L, who is a 4 time marathoner! It's so great having a clinic where all doctors are active in sports -- they "get it."  We chatted a lot about my marathon, her marathons, the injury, how my leg failed me during the marathon, and my training.

Until now, I've followed a specific training plan, 5 days a week of running, and throwing in some cross-training, fairly inconsistently. Interestingly, Dr. L trained, and successfully completed all 4 of her marathons running 3 days/week!

Knowing my defective body and my body's limits... quite likely that 5 days/week of running is not for me! Sad, yes, but whatever. Perhaps I need more time to recover between runs, and am causing myself to be more susceptible to injury following this generic "out of the book" plan. Just because the others I run with haven't had nearly the injuries I've had, doesn't mean everyone can do it. I look at some of you pulling 50+ miles a week... could I? Forget it! Not this body... but knowing that, I also wouldn't even try.

Will doing this mean no more injuries. Nope. Will I have the exact same result by following a similar plan to hers? No guarantee, but obviously no plans can provide that... so it's worth a try. 3 days running, 2 days cross-training (cycling, elliptical, etc.)

Yes, yes, of course I need this effin leg to be cut off injury to be healed first. Once I get the ok, I will be switching up my training plan to see if I can end the injury streak.  I've been looking at the FIRST program which has no back to back running days, only 3 days/week. I may also seek out a base-building cycling program of some sort to incorporate into my cross-training days.  But, I have plenty of time to work on this. :(

Speaking of injury, here's an update. Calf is still almost as tight as marathon day, the sucker just won't release, and feels like it's pinching nerves or something in the process. Ugh. During my treatment today, however, she loosened up a spot that we hadn't found before... good news. Bad news, high potential of a stress fracture. :( This time higher up on the tibia, about 2 inches below my knee.  Hard to tell as there is a bit of muscle tissue there, but pain is almost directly on the bone, tender in one specific spot, worse at night. Sigh. X-rays didn't show anything, but rarely do. Could do a bone scan to confirm if it's bone or muscle, but I've already had one done within the last 8 months, and seriously, I've got enough issues without continuously injecting myself with radioactive dye.

We've agreed that I'd be taking the time off anyway, so no need to do the scan. She's estimating between 4-7 weeks no running. Her hope is that if it is a stress fracture, hopefully its been caught in the early stages, and that it's not as bad as the first round (since it hasn't seemed as painful), so recovery time may be slightly less.  If it's muscular, then hopefully we'll be at the lower end of recovery time.

One week down, lots of patience to go.

Oh sweetie...I'm so sorry about the calf. I've been running only three days a week (at most) since January. My body just can't take it. When I do more than three...I get hurt. That's the reason for the bike.

You completely had me rolling over being a "clinic slut" hahahahah...I've gotta remember that one.

Hang in there...

Hope you get better quick.

I have a friend who ran 5/week for two year trying to qualify for Boston, she shaved a minute or so off each time but didn't get the time she needed. Frustrated she decided to change everything. She ran 3/week, did yoga once, weights 2/week and an easy cycle 1/week. 4 months later she qualified and shaved 23 minutes off her previous time!

Oh man...hang in there. Hopefully the time will go fast and you'll heal up quicker than anticipated. I think it's great that you found docs who are also runners...they know the desire you have to get back out there quickly.

have you looked at the FIRST training plan? it calls for very few runs, but only quality ones so it works better for a lot of folks.

may the force be with you in recovery!

No no no, not a stress fracture! Sound like you're in pretty good hands, so get well soon.

Just keep the fire burning deep inside and you will be okay. Its all about the climb towards becoming your best you as a runner. Kudos to you!

When I was going to PT regularly, I often felt like a physio-whore, seeing whoever could take me on any particular day!

I like the concept of 3 days/week and I'm glad to see you looking forward, beyond this injury.

I've been doing the FIRST program for my marathon (in 24 days) and it's awesome! i also combined an olympic distance tri plan with the FIRST marathon plan and the Tri Power strength program for a very complete training plan that's all in one spreadsheet. I'll email you the spreadsheet soon just so you'll have it for comparrison. the second half of the year is all half ironman training plan, feel free to ignore that part.

adjust the miles to something you feel comfortable with. I also have a section in there to log my actual workouts, so you can see how slack i've been. and i still feel prepared (but paranoid) for my triathlon/marathon week.

Hope it turns out to be closer to 4 weeks-- day to day it seems like forever, but before you know it a month can pass. And the three days a week plan sounds good to me, although I've always been intimidated of the amount of fast running required by FIRST.

Sounds like you have a great clinic there! I hope your recovery goes quickly and it is only muscle issues. I tend to merge plans into a 4 day a week running schedule but have heard great things about FIRST. Good luck finding what works for you!

I think that running 3 days and biking 2 days can work.

Chin up Mel!

patience is one of those toughest challenges, i think. injuries are just incredibly frustrating, there is no way around them. sounds like you have a good doc and treatment, so hopefully that will pay off!!!!!

I definitely believe that adding in cross training to the routine helps running out so much more than just...well, running more. My biggest improvements on the run came when I started putting some quality work in on the bike. Fingers crossed for some speedy recovery for you Mel.

You can see muscles and bones on an MRI, have they talked about doing that to help diagnose the problem?

Hang in there with the calf! I know it sucks, I'm still having tightness in mine. I'm also with you on the no 50 mile weeks for me. As much as I wish I could, I just think my body was meant for shorter distances (and hopefully speed in those short distances) than marathons. It's been a bit dishearting, but, it will all be okay! :) So don't worry, you won't be alone! Hope you continue to heal up.

Wow sorry about your injury. They suck big time. Dont let it get you down, you will be running again before you know it.

:( one step forward, two steps back? once you get back in the running business, i think something like the first plan would be a good fit for you. you'll still get your fix, but you'll also give you body plenty of rest/non-impact exercise.

loved your getting-around-the-clinic comment ;)

hang in there, try to enjoy the time off? (i know, virtually impossible...)

The Happy Runner said...

Ah, nuts. I feel for you! Like others have said, I'd suggest checking out the FIRST plan. It could work well for you.

I hope it turns out to be the least amount of recovery time for you, sistre!

You've paid enough dues already!

Clinic sluts.....that cracked me up and made me spit my Gatorade out!
Love the picture too-how true!
So we can have stress fractures elsewhere besides our feet???? Great, I have so much to learn about running!

IzzyBubbles said...

Ah, sorry to hear about the possible stress fracture. But I think sometimes rest can do great things for a runner's body. And if it makes you feel better, I've never been the type that could handle 50 mile weeks, and I never ran more than 4 days a week during my last marathon training and I don't think it hurt me at all. I think if you keep your body healthy you're way better off than putting in tons of mileage and tearing yourself up.

I hope it's not a stress fracture!!! I was a clinic slut (LOL!) for a while with my chiro - just cuz he was so stinkin' cute!

I was running 3-4 days a week with cross training for my last, & it worked pretty well. I'm going with FIRST this time around - I might need to rethink my target paces though.

Lisa Slow-n-Steady said...

I'm a 3 days per week runner too! Just gotta make it quality running.

and quality cross training.

It's so hard for anyone who is serious about workouts and challenges to sit and recoup through injury.

Well known fact. World class athletes who end up with horrendous injuries always say I didn't realize I needed the rest.

Jeez Mel you're having a tough time! It's still early days though... will be thinking of you :)

Hope you've caught it early and that the recovery time is on the lower end. Totally LOL at being a "clinic slut".

I've been trying to run five days a week this spring and it's just not working for me. I'm going to be trying to cut back to see if I'll stop feeling worn down all the time. Not sure what cross training will be yet... maybe gardening LOL.

As corny as this sounds, you'll get through this. Injuries stink, but you will get better soon. Sending you big hugs!

Beth said...

I think 5 days is a lot for someone prone to injury. I've found 4 days is all I can handle. You have such a great attitude and you are doing a great job getting this all figured out. Hang in there!

I Run for Fun said...

Mel, so sorry about the calf. But, you are handling this so well. I'm beginning to think 5 days is too much for me too. We all have our limits. And biking and swimming can be just as fun. Take care and wish you an extra speedy recovery! I'll be crossing my fingers for you!

JenZen said...

Ouch!!! Good thing they found it - bad thing it's there. So sorry girl!

I trained for my marathon on 3-4 days running. I found my body (knees and calves) just cannot handle running 5 days a week. I was getting too many injuries. So I scaled it back and actually run much better and faster now! (and by fast I mean - back of the packer...ha!) You'll get it done.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

bill carter said...

All you can do is hang in there and have faith that this will get better. It is an amazing thing how the body can heal itself and your's will too.

Best of luck Mel and take it easy on yourself.

Michelle said...

Hang in there my friend!!

I think changing up your training is an excellent idea. I may try that as well!!

Be well!!!

raulgonemobile said...

Hang in there.. I have a lot of trouble being patient with this sort of thing myself.

I gave the 5 day a week thing a shot over the winter, and I just couldn't do it.. I think 4 is my upper limit. Like you, I'm impressed with people that log these gazillion mile weeks.

Good luck..

RunnerDude said...

Hey! I thought it sounded crazy too, but less running can actually be better. For my last marathon I stopped running every day and did focused quality workouts instead of just packing on the miles. I did a speed workout (repeats), a tempo run, and easy run and my long run. So basically I was running 4 days a week. The Speed work out mileage was never over 3 miles. Sometimes I'd swap out the speed workout for a hill workout. It really did work. I think the speed workouts and the tempo runs really helped with my endurance as well as speed. Set a PR in that marathon. Think about trying it.
