unmiserable

wow, you runners are incredible... my post from yesterday was a silly request for YOU to run... and "donate" those hard earned, sweaty, tough miles to moi, just to make me feel like I participated somehow in National Running Day! You just toss them away like that, as if they're free and plentiful, to an injured, virtual blogger that most of you have never met? LOL  Awesome people, you all are.  :D

Can't say I sat around all day doing nothing while you all were out there running though... I did go out tonight for another cross-training walk on a slippery pool change room floor with crutches swim!  Got to the locker area, started fumbling with my lock and a girl a few lockers down from me had obviously heard me walk up, gives me the up and down and says "wow, good for you".

We started talking, she asks about my injury, tells me about her friend that tore her hamstring, will never be able to run distance again, but has now been doing speed-walking. She explains that running is not her thing, she'd never attempt a marathon, but is preparing for a 13 mile swim! That's a long way running, I can't imagine doing that in water!  I need to take a few seconds to catch my breath after 50 meters!! Unsurprisingly, she was a very strong swimmer and knocked out lap after lap.

Oh! I got a present... a waterproof casing for my ipod shuffle that clips onto the goggles to listen to music while doing laps! It made swimming even more fun tonight, seriously!! I'm loving it!

One huge benefit that's come out of swimming is that my slow pace in the water makes me feel like a decently-paced runner! LOL Not really, but it was a funny thought.

We met up by the lockers after I finished my shower, and we chatted again briefly... she said she was impressed that I was in such good spirits about it. Sunday will be 4 weeks, I told her that my choices are sit at home being miserable feeling sorry for myself, or doing something for myself that seems to be helping my recovery and maintaining some level of fitness... I think I'm making the right choice.

So, with all the miles you did for me (I think about 24 miles were donated!!! Incredible or what!?!), and my 1550 meters in the pool... I'd say it's been quite a day, and now I need to go to sleep :)

I covered just over 2 miles - so if you throw my donation in..... That brings you up to just about 26.2!

That waterproof casing is pretty sweet! That would even be great for summer races (that allow iPods) where getting misted may happen...

I have to get a waterproff casing for my shuffle! OMG it's great!! where did you get it! Velcro and I ran 4 today! I mile for you and one mile for another injured running blogger!!! Check out where you ran today! Bet you didn't realize you were running in a cool southern california today!

I just wanted to say hi to a fellow injured runner.

I hope you had as happy a National Running Day as possible without pounding the pavement.

you must be worn out from all that running and swimming. i'd be half dead from the swimming alone! 13 mile swim - i'd definitely drown. no thanks! sounds cool, but i am a brick when you toss me in water. glad you were able to get in a good workout, and with music - extra sweet.

WHAT?! A waterproof casing for the shuffle - INGENIOUS. It does get a little boring in the pool lap after lap after lap, but having my music will definitely help :)

Add four miles to your NRD total, girl.

Well I totally missed NRD but I would have donated a mile or more if I hadn't been sitting on my butt for no good reason! And? I want some tunes for the pool too. What a great idea!

I love the ipod casing......that's scary, I like it loud, I wonder if all the other swimmers would be able to feel the "beat" under the water!?
I sneaked in 1 mile yesterday....and it's all yours!

From me you ended up with donated walked miles. I didn't run. *hangs head in shame*

Great job at the pool!!

that's cool! I ended up not making it out for a run yesterday, but i still did weights and biking.

there's a lot of fun and challenging things in the pool.

A 13 mile swim?! Wow.

Glad you were able to get to the pool for a workout. I realy admire your determination. I think I'd be wallowing.

Love your little waterproof shuffle case! What a great idea. I always wondered if they made something like that.

The waterproof headphone looks so cool. Unfortunately, I need to concentrate on swimming!

24?

Sistre, I want my mile back!

No, wait! I want TWO because don't you have a "double your mileage back if you're not satisfied" policy here?

O, forget it! It's probably got all kilometre cooties on it now, so just keep it!

Pffttt!

Great job with the swimming, sistre!

Take my 6 miles, too!! That gives you an even 30!

just reading ur blog 1st time today (from Lindsay's). Read back to marathon day. i kind of misted up (rare4me) and wanted to say I feel for you. As a runner who's delt w/injuries i know some of the frustration. I just recently ran my first 26.2 & it hurt. Lots of walking yet I know that i was ready/prepared. Anyway, just felt I had to comment on your raceReport. It was so open & captured your experience & emotions. I look forward to following ur progress!

hahahahaha at Irene's comment...isn't getting "misted" just a nice way to say "sweaty"? hahahaha

Yes, the waterproof cover is sweet. I'd like one of those...but then I'd need a shuffle too...and I've already got enough iPods. I wonder if they make something like that for the Nano?

I'm gonna try swimming today too (I'll suck at it). Thanks for your advise and support on my blog about my foot injuries...you are my hero right now. You know that, don't you?

Who ever invented that is AMAZING, who knew you could listen to music while swimming. I didn't run today. But my "outside to get fresh air then hurry back to the office" will be dedicated to you today..

Was just stoping by to see how things were going for you. I know it is a tough battle and feels like the longest road to come back from but you have before and will again. I am glad you found a way to make the time pass during swims. I must look into that case. Take care of u!

hey with running laur you got a marathon! wooo-hoo! ;) and a waterproof case for an iPod. AWESOME.

Those waterproof headphone as case rock! Great job on the swim yesterday :)

That's a cool case.. gotta admit.

I always thought I was a strong swimmer when I was younger. Now, I realize how bad at it I really am. It takes me forever to do a mile, so I can't imagine doing 13.

"I told her that my choices are sit at home being miserable feeling sorry for myself, or doing something for myself that seems to be helping my recovery and maintaining some level of fitness... " .. You're definitely making the right choice, and you provide a lot of inspiration

That's a cool gizmo for the Shuffle. Great job with the swim!

Heather said...

Wow, between the donated "marathon" yesterday and swim, you really got your workout on. :)

MCM Mama said...

Shoot, with my 3.5 miles from today (couldn't run yesterday), and the other ones donated on this post, I think you are well on your way to an Ultra. You go girl!!

Way to stay positive and keep up the workouts!

i just got a thing from wellsphere and it triggered something in my brain about you and not liking them... can you refresh me on that?

I Run for Fun said...

Great job on keeping up the swimming and the spirits. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you! Add my miles too...I missed your previous post, so you can have my miles from yesterday and today (4+5).

I am here to tell you that 13 miles in the water is a long effen way! Holy crap. Much longer than you would think. Talk about a mental game - I was done after three miles. No body to talk to, nothin. Best of luck to her, a daunting task to say the least.

I love swimming with music. I'm so happy that you get to listen to something. When I run I like music, but I'm thinking about trying an audio book for swimmning. Great job at the pool!

I've never heard of a waterproof case thingee for iPods. That is very cool!

I'm proud of you for working so hard. Swimming for exercise is not a fun thing for me. I'm glad you have found ways to make it fun for you!

Thanks for encouraging me to push myself to get to the pool. Every bit of motivation helps me right now.

Hi Mel! I found your blog through Runner Dude's. That shuffle casing is awesome. I love my shuffle and have always wanted to take it in the pool to make lap swimming go faster. What a find. I also wanted to write to say hi, since I just started my own blog www.unrefinedathlete.com about experimenting with ways to increase your fitness that are natural (i.e. no drugs, etc.). Hope your recovery continues to go well!
