Things I learned today...

  • Mother Nature seems to insist on resistance training (wind) for our group ride on Tuesdays, and often threatens rain. Today, however, she delivered.
  • Sunshine doesn't guarantee no rain
  • Straightening my hair is pretty useless if humid and rainy -- i looked like a drowned rat after the ride
  • drafting on the rear wheel of another rider is great -- EXCEPT when it's pouring rain. You will get the spray coming off the rider in front of you.
  • Also, keep mouth closed -- especially if chewing gum, so that the spray doesn't make your gum gritty
  • Rain and sweat sting the eyes; it sucks when you have contacts in
  • Wet roads, slick tires, cornering too fast with an oncoming tractor is a perfect recipe for a spill. Thankfully, it wasn't me, and the other rider is ok. Sore thumb, and a bit of road rash on his knee and elbow
  • Really big rain drops and possibly small hail make a really distinct sound as it bounces off your helmet
  • Slick tires + wet pavement + sloped road + potholes + rain = white knuckles while holding on tight!
  • I think drivers purposely search out large puddles to splash you as they driving by. When you're already wet, who cares.
  • White socks won't always stay white
  • Wet cycling shoes feel like wet running shoes. Heavy and squishy.
  • Post ride coffee has never tasted better!
By the tone of most of this post, you might think I'm whining or complaining... I'm not. It's amazing how a run or ride in the rain can make you feel like a kid again! :D As long as you're careful.

Tomorrow will be a run and a swim!

One of the first rides I did (recently) was in misty/rainy conditions...I went back and forth between being absolutely petrified and completely thrilled at riding in the rain!

Glad that whoever took a spill wasn't badly hurt. I live in fear of that too.

Oh, and FIRST!

You certainly gained a bit of knowledge today. Good for you for taking it like a kid. LOL :)

Sounds super fun and super scary! I'm glad you had fun, in spite of the wetness and brown socks.

I love driving through puddles... but I'm always very careful not to splash people. I'm just nice like that. lol

I love running in the rain, no matter how cold and heavy, it feels great. I HATE cycling in the rain, hate it! The hot coffee and hot shower does feel good afterwards though.

I don't think your post sounds whiny at all; on the contrary, it is very upbeat --considering the circumstances.

As for myself, I think I'd grow more fond of running in the rain IF I could manage to at least keep my feet dry. :)

It actually sounds like a lot of fun! I white knuckle biking in dry conditions....I can't imagine do it in the rain.

Rain can be fun once in a while but do clean the bike after to remove all the grit and relube where necessary.

I had lots of fun commuting home last Friday on my bike in a 10-15mm downpour. Aquacycling is what a friend of mine calls it.

Oh that makes sense. I never knew those things from a cyclist's perspective. Interesting. Hmmm. I think I'd better stick with my running.

Another reason I love my "fat" hybrid tires!!! My 75 miler back in June was all in the rain and hail-that sucked, it does make a weird sound off the helmet!

Yes, riding in the rain can be fun, as long as your careful. And you never know when you might have to do it in a race. Beware of going through puddles where you can't see the bottom, though!

Sounds like you had a blast. One of these days I hope to have a similar story. Oh wait I may need to get on my bike to have one.

Sounds like an interesting ride! I'm sure you still had a smile on the whole time.

Thanks for the update re: Midsummer. Hopefully someone will get back to you. :)

be careful in the rain! glad you were able to get a solid and safe training ride in.

i was drenched by a truck driving through a puddle when i was running one morning in college. thankfully it was not the winter, so it wasn't unbearable for my last ~2 miles home.

I would be whining and complaining if I got splashed by a car, haha. Good effort!

Cars definitely try to hit all the big puddles :) Way to go out there toughy!
