whoa, it doesn't bend that way!!!

First, thank you all very much for the support and kind words from the last few posts. I know they were downers, but you all helped me tremendously. Thanks for sticking with me.

I really needed to get back into a semblance of routine; it's already enough of a challenge being a single mother, juggling being a girlfriend, a mother, working full-time, and now not only running, but also fitting in cycling and swimming (happily, I must add). Regardless of how difficult it is at times, I need it in my life.

After a fairly heavy dinner, and taking the kids (and Jay) out for ice cream, I headed to the pool for a swim, really hoping that I wouldn't sink to the bottom. For those on Facebook that cheered me on, (and reminded me about the beer I consumed this weekend!) thanks, LOL.

Doesn't seem to matter which pool I go to, they seem to always be busy during lane swimming in the summer. Winter, not so much. 3 double lanes, slow, medium, fast. Already a few doing breaststroke in the medium lane, so I hopped into the fast lane and while still hoping I wouldn't sink to the bottom, I now also hoped I could keep up. Eventually there were about 8 of us in the fast lane, and if you read JoyRuN's post, you'll know that I'm not the only one that finds circle swimming irritating. Finally, one guy asked if we could split the lane in two, swim out on the outsides, and back on the insides. Everyone agreed, and it ended up being boys vs. girls, 3 of us on the left. It worked much better this way, but I'm not used to having to stay so close to the rope, especially on my left. Normally you'd swim counter clockwise, but our side was clockwise, 4 abreast. Well, I did such a good job staying close to the rope that the pinky finger on my left hand jammed into the plastic lane marker, and got bent pretty awkwardly. Throbbed quite a bit for a few minutes, but I have full range of motion, and don't feel a thing now, and no swelling or bruising as yet. Is it only me that can manage to hurt myself during lane swimming? Other than that, it was an awesome swim, I'm really feeling stronger in the water!

To the lady standing in front of the mirror in your t-shirt, undies and sandals, drying your hair, and obviously quite oblivious and unaware, you're welcome. I only hope someone would do stop me the same way before leaving the change-room before getting fully dressed. :)

Good GAWD - EIGHT to a lane is just insane!!!

And splitting the lane in two - I'm SUCH a flailer - I'd be hitting people left and right!

When I swam in high school and college, I had permanent bruises on the tops of my hands from the lane lines. It's definitely not just you!

Splitting the lane is so much better. Luckily for me I swim so early in the morning I usually get a lane to myself.

Glad to hear swimming is going well.

What you don't realize is that joyRuN is from Joisey and here in Joisey when we say "circle swimming" we meant what the rest of the world means when they say "circle jerk". So what you don't realize is joyRuN was actually talking about her perverted behavior in a public pool in that post of hers. (She posts stuff like that ALL the time.)

See? We yanks talk different from you 'nucks. For instance: This ...

I only hope someone would do stop me the same way before leaving the change-room before getting fully dressed. ...

may actually make some syntactic sense to a 'nuck, but I confess I had NO idea what you were hinting at. Were you MAD at this woman? Had she done something wrong? Were you lesbianically turned on by her outfit?

I just can't tell!

Yanks! We're so unversed in Canada-Speak!

oh i'd be spazzing out big time in a crowded lane! i need one to myself, MAYBE one other person. but again, i don't have the skills that you do :)

hope your finger is ok! i'm sure i'd manage to scrape myself on the wall or floor of the pool if that makes ya feel better.

Pool crowds....ugh!

EndorphinBuzz said...

Hehehe. That setup you mentioned is "standard" at one of the pools I go to. I always get bruises from the lane markers!!

tooooo crowded at the pool. frustrating, eh?

You have to be kidding! She was going to walk out without pants?! Hahaha, good for you not being too shy to say something. I'm sure she appreciated it. :)

You don't cease to amaze me with how you manage to juggle it all. You're sucha superstar!

Great swim - I would be way too chicken to share a lane with so many people.

@Glaven, no, wasn't mad at this lady, sorry if it didn't make sense. Lady was half dressed, picked up her stuff and was ready to leave! I kindly let her know that she missed the step of putting on pants first!

Nice job fitting it all in, that's the 4th, 5th or 6th discipline; balance!

I would totally hurt myself if I swam, probably slip on the walk in and split open my head or something, I am such a KLUTZ..

Amazing that you are able to balance all of your training, kids, work, boyfriend, etc.. I thought running was hard, but tri training sounds TOUGH..

Keep up the good work buddy!

Ha, I love the story about the lady with no pants! I probably would have managed to strangle myself on the rope - good for you for sharing the lane so well. :)

UGH! Sorry about the pinky!
Good for you for helping out Ms. Half Naked!!!!

I have whacked my wrist really hard into the lane dividers and gotten some pretty big bruises. No you aren't the only one to injure yourself lane swimming!

Circle swimming sucks! I hate it!!!!

I'm catching up on the other posts, though from this one it sounds like you went through a little bit of a rough patch. Glad you're out of the funk!

Wow! Mel, when do you find the time to do all that? That's pretty amazing.

Glaven Q. Heisenberg said...

YOU SHOULDA LET HER LEAVE WITHOUT PANTS ON!1!

That would've been AWESOME!1!

You Canadians are too nice.

LOL at the no pants lady. I'd so be her if I tried to add swimming to my already cluttered life. I don't know how you balance it all and sleep!

Great jobZ!

If I'm ever crazy enough to attempt to "swim" again, I only hope that you or Carlee are close by! I hope you heal quickly. I'll stick to hurting myself on dry land, thank-you!

Hi Mel

I have to admit that I always enjoy reading your posts. They are so absolutely honest and deep that they always give me perspective on my own life. You truly are an old soul and I mean that in the most complementary way. You have lived alot already and when that happens you seem to appreciate the little things a whole bunch more.

Take care of that leg and have a great summer!

For some reason, I decided to wear my heart rate monitor while swimming laps. I was just curious as to what my hr was. I whacked my watch on the lane divider and the stop button popped off. It still works fine, but is a pain to hit. That was a dumb idea...

I Run for Fun said...

Ouch! If it makes you feel any better, I'm jammed my fingers while lane swimming too. You are doing so great, Mel. It's such a pleasure to watch you improve dramatically as an athlete.

8 to a lane is crazy, here only 4 are admitted but there is not the division in slow, medium, fast. For this reason I prefer to swim across the sea when possible: no limits and no crowd!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Yours seems very inspirational..you've been through a lot and it sounds like you have a ton on your plate! Hats off to you for keeping all those balls in the air! Glad the swimming is coming along! That's my nemesis but I am trying to make peace with it 4 x per week! We'll see if we end up as friends! Take care
