Getting to the beach on Saturday morning was a lot easier than a few weeks ago. Once at the beach it was time for a washroom break, set up transition, wetsuit on, into the cold water. Short easy swim to warm up.
First set was the try-a-tri distance, 400m. Did it and felt great! Thankfully I had my breath... not the same panic from two weeks ago! Already a good start. Walk back to the start, this time, instead of following the rope marking off the shallow end, it was time for the real deal... out to the deep water... YIKES! Around the buoys, triangle course, approximately the race distance once again.
I'm not scared of water, but I also haven't done a lot of lake swimming in my life... neither of my parents were the camping type, not many family vacations, etc. Icky lake bottoms, weeds, moss and stuff like that all gross me out. Deep breath, let's do this.
I found closing my eyes when my face was in the water helped a bit... open them up to see where I was going when up for air. That worked, but I just started telling myself that it was no deeper than the pool, and that the new trend was painting the pool bottoms black. Ya, that's it! That's why it was so dark down there, no weeds, no moss, no gross stuff, it was painted.
Whatever. It worked. I swam the whole thing, didn't flip onto my back once, didn't stop, just DID IT!! I got to the shallow end, started peeling off my wetsuit, running up to transition feeling like I conquered the world! Or maybe a bit of a fear in my own world... If I could do that... wow! Once we finished our mock tri, those of us using wetsuits had to get back into the water for another swim sans the added buoyancy of a wetsuit -- in case the water temp miraculously raises above a certain temperature, we may not be able to race with them on, so better to get used to that before hitting panic mode on race day, which happened to one guy in our group already! No problem.
As I was getting out of the water, one of the more experienced clinic members said I looked awesome in the water, great stroke, fluid movement. The positive feedback (especially about my swimming, which I've sucked at so badly when I first started and have been working at lots) was so elevating after what I was already considering a successful day!
I have lots of thoughts about spectating the triathlon this morning but will save it for my next post so this one doesn't get too long. Plus, I need a nap. After only 4 hours of sleep (long story...), I'm having to do a lot of editing (read: a lot more than normal), and backspacing to make sure this post is readable... fingers crossed. :)
Oh, and the results from the pop quiz in the previous post... C, although certainly most of them answers would apply. The firemen were parked at a school along my route. ;) Jay is convinced I was destined to be with a firemen, as I tend to have a knack for finding them wherever I go. Only 70 more sleeps till the Nike Women's :D

Swimming across the sea is a lot funnier than the work in the pool and there are not lanes full of persons. Isn't it?
Well done Mel, another one of those "amazing conquers", you are just so awesome, don't ever forget that!!
Good job, you are more than ready.
great job on a great swim!!
great job on yoru OWS!! Remember that positive feeling and confidence next time. You'll do fantastic!!
Way to face those fears, sistre!
You're awesome!! I know I couldn't handle the swimming!!
This is very interesting because I feel like I'm a few weeks behind you in my training. I'm ready to do a try-a-tri event. Just to see about the transitions. So, I need to do a swim in open water. And yes, I'm nervous about it.
Thanks for taking the time to post this for us. ;)
Great stuff, looks like it's all coming together!
Well done Mel! Thanks for the recommendation of the clothing too - am getting on to it!
I went to Lake Erie today, and cannt imagine doing a tri in an open water swim like that. Ok Im not a swimmer. Only way I could do a Triathalon is if it was bike, run, golf. Keep it up your doing great!
Nicely done on the swim! Good job on working hard to improve your swimming.
I told Beer Geek this weekend when I was swimming at the hotel that if I ever wanted to do a tri, I'd need to take swimming lessons. LOL
4 hours of sleep?! geez louise!!!! and i was complaining in my post cuz of 6 hours :) i am a baby,..hehe. sounds like you are really swimming along!!!! :) it makes me want to go to the beach so badly every time i read your posts... i will get there... Hopefully soon!!! though i will not be "working" i will be "floating" :)
Nice work on the swim! I'm a pool girl so the whole open water thing is new to me.
Yay Nike!
Great job Mel!!!
AWESOME! I'll have to try that visualization - they painted the bottom of the pool black :D
lake bottoms... *shudder* i am so grossed out by the slimeyness! i'm not sure a black pool floor would have done the trick for me :) i'd have to wear flippers or those water shoes that were 'in style' back in the 90s.
way to go on conquering that fear! and hopping back in sans-wetsuit!
As I walked into the lake the other morning for a swim, it was so clear and there were tons of sticks on the bottom-as everyone knows my fears of the snake world, I concentrated so hard on each and every one of those "sticks" making sure they didn't "swim" away!
Great job on facing a fear, like I always like to try to remember: "we must become comfortable with the uncomfortable"......
Mel, maybe you were born to tri. It sounds like every time you blog about your current training you 1) love it!!, 2) are getting all kinds of positive feedback from those who are watching, coaching, training with you, 3) it all sounds so natural for you.
I am so happy for you because it sounds like you love it and are doing great with it. It's also so well rounded and treating your body well.
Congrats on another successful mock tri and AWESOME that you conquered a fear. I would definitely have an issue with that. I love the idea of pretending the bottom was painted black!
Looking forward to hearing about the live triathlon spectating experience!
Great job on the swim, that's great that you're more comfortable in the water now. I think I may use that "paint the bottom of the pool black" line of thinking this weekend:)
Great swimming - I'm so impressed by how you've taken on the swimming!
Great job! I'm attempting my first OWS this weekend, and I'm already TOTALLY freaked out.
Amazing...love the mental thought of the black pool. I am AFRAID of swimming around people and in deep dark water, just reading this gives me anxiety. But reading the compliments and your improvement...AWESOME!!
Love all the thoughts about the open water being the pool... just black. So happy you survived and enjoyed the swim :)
Glad to hear the second open water swim went even better. I'll have to remember that about the lake bottom just being painted. Any gators & snakes I might see too are just painted :-)
Wow! I am so impressed with your swim. You rock!
The thing I find most challenging in lake swimming is keep oriented enough to know where I am going and smooth enough to consentrate of good technique and swim stroke effientcy!
Fireman rock!!! Just saying! Nice swim in a lake with a dark bottom....I think that might even bother me! pools are so nice!!
thanks for the comment.
You say that now but you probably never thought you would do a tri.
(now thats something I am never going to do)
