once a cheater, always a cheater?

it's not you, it's me. i don't mean to hurt your feelings. it's not intentional. but i'm sure you won't even miss me.

I hinted in my last post about something I stumbled upon and am contemplating. Maybe I'll share my dirty little secret with you now, even though I've yet to check it out or make a decision.

My son takes swimming lessons on Sunday evenings at a pool that's about 2 minutes from my house. Literally. Since starting this session, I've noticed a group of adults going into the pool after he's done... never thought to ask what they were part of. Sitting in the gallery on the upper floor overlooking the pool, I saw the swimmers streaming in, milling around. My eyes connected with someone else's, vaguely familiar, but with a swimcap and a bathing suit, I can never be too sure. Her expression sorta showed that I might be familiar to her too...but being in street clothes, without my bike helmet, a wetsuit or my running clothes, she may have been trying to place me too.

That's when I decided to ask what group they were. I was told Master Ducks, but as I was leaving, I noticed a sign advertising the swim group, the swim times matched up, and a website address; they were not the Master Ducks, but a Masters swim team. Once home, I hopped on the site... NO-EFFIN'-WAY!!! This swim club has merged with the local triathlon club (hello! Where were you when I was scouring the internet in June!!) and will be offering a triathlon program in the coming months!

When I started running in 2007, I first started on my own, then got convinced by a friend to join a clinic... he bailed on me the first night. Ugh. I became good friends with the others in the group, and even after the clinic was done, continued running with them, and most recently, traveled with 8 girls for the Nike Women's in SF.

Last June, I found my eyes wandering, my heart yearning for more, and looking for something different... I found the tri-clinic. I was cheating on my running group. They still give me a hard time!! (filled with love of course.) So, the tri-clinic had approximately 40 people, and once again, I've become good friends with a number of them, and still arrange to go for a ride, run, swim or a drink with some. In fact, some of them are in the tri clinic swimming sessions that I'm currently taking on Monday nights, which will be completed at the end of November :(

With the prospect of this new triathlon group and masters swimming (I think I'm going to go join them Sunday night to check it out...), it's not likely that I'd be rejoining last year's tri clinic next season, and my runs with the original running group wouldn't be as frequent either. I'd be cheating again! I totally appreciate the introduction that they gave me to triathlon, they obviously had a huge impact on me since I'm hooked! But this seems like a fantastic opportunity, about 30k closer to home, and with multiple trips each week, it's a lot of time & gas, meaning more time at home with Terron! It's year-round, so I'd be able to maintain my swimming up to 3 times/week if I want, with the possibility of meeting others that live much closer to me to ride/run with. The price is within my budget, and still a lot less than hiring a personal coach.

I talked to Jay about my 'guilty' feeling of cheating on not one, but two groups... he said that I have no allegiance or obligation to fulfil, I need to do what I want, and what makes me happy. Hmmm.

(BTW, no need to go overboard in agreeing with him, it'll only serve to swell his ego should he read this post. LOL)

Those of you in a Master's swim program, thoughts? Good? bad?

I belong to multiple "tri" groups that offer swimming, workouts, support, commiseration, and celebration. I like the flexibility and find each helps me in some way. Realize, sometimes it is hard to be selfish but this is all about you and what works best for you. The friendships will be an unexpected bonus

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, "cheater!" Go with your gut feeling, and your conscience will be fine. Family obligations always take priority, as you know. So "more time at home with Terron" sums it all up.

It is all about variety. The more people/groups you train with the more you will learn. Go for it!!!

the more friends the better!!!

Yeah I say go for it. I've never done masters swim, but would love to try.

I say go for it. I'm all about close to home. At least give it a try. (I know nothing about swimming with a group, so I'll leave that to the others).

I think anybody serious about training would be totally fine with you getting into another group for any of the reasons you mentioned--variety, vicinity to home, time, etc.,

You can never have too many friends in this world... its good to know alot of running/biking/swim people, you will always have someone to work out with!

DO IT!! Would you care if someone did several groups? Only good things will come from it for you.

Do what makes you happy. And this sounds like it would!

I think it is great to meet as many people and TRI (try) as many things as possible..

And the fact that it is closer to home is just icing on the cake.

DO IT! You're not hurting anybody but yourself if you don't and why would you want to do that? ;)

You gotta do what's right for YOU! This sounds like a wonderful opportunity! I'm excited for you and I'm not even interested in swimming or triathlons for myself. I just know how hard you've worked to be where you are and you deserve to be in a situation that allows you to keep moving forward. I can't wait to hear how it goes. :)

btw, I love the new blog background and that cartoon is hilarious!

I would do it!!! Swim workouts in the dead of winter, you will so far ahead of the curve next season!!!

Very cool. I would do it. the more people you are around the more help and advice you'll get.

Okay, that is TOO good of an opportunity to pass up! How amazing that it's year round and so close to home. Awesome!

I'm sure the others will understand. ;) You'll still see your friends out on the tri/race circuits.

Love that "Don't you read my blogt?" cartoon. Hahahaha!

Thats great... I am learning to swim through a masters swim myself. I think it will benefit you more being that is closer to home.

Great opportunities to learn and grow as a triathlete. Nothing wrong with that!

i don't think you should feel bad at all! it's not that you are hating on the people - the club as a whole can't provide you with the same benefits (namely year round workouts) and the closer-to-home part certainly helps. try it out, hopefully you'll have continued success and form even more friendships!

Absolutely go and yes, you will meet new people who will support you too. "it's all about you", now what others might think of you, if we held ourselves back because of that, well then, where would any of us be?

Go for it, enjoy it and next year you'll be doubly ready!!

Sorry, but I have to agree with Jay on all counts. Do it with no regrets at all. Just the fact that it is so much closer is reason enough in my book.

I also felt the same when I joined another group, like I was cheating, but I soon found out that several people train with more than one or two groups. One lady I've met recently trains with three different groups, just so she can always train with someone each time she goes out, plus, each group offers something different. I guess it's not so uncommon.

haha you are so funny!! I am in a couple groups right now and I can tell the monday night group feels a littel betrayed, but i don't really care. I need to try out osomethings and see what works for moi

it's really a matter of best fit!!!! and that is different for everyone.

love that cartoon by the way.

i will forever remember in season one of how i met your mother when barney says in response to something, "Hello! don't you read my blog????"

lol.

There are too many positives of this group to pass up! Go check it out and if it doesn't work out you can drop it but at least give it a shot.

masters swim is awesome. give it a shot first, then consider the tri parts of the group if you like the people. go for the gold girl.

Who says you can only have one circle of friends. I say pick what is closest and works best for you. Your fellow club should understand... I hope!!

Keep on rocking it girl!!!

It's so hard to find the time, etc that works for training. Do what works best for you so it keeps you coming back for more. Everyone will understand!

More is more; if you can handle it go for it!

Mel I love it! You're so funny. I think you're fine to cheat every now and again. Are we really designed as human beings to be monogamous to one training group?

I'M SO EXCITED YOU'RE DOING AROUND THE BAY!!!!!!!! Can we PLEASE meet up and have lunch or dinner or something?

Sorry I've been so slack checking on blogs lately. My book is due Thursday and after that I'm back in blog land with a vengeance :)

I can't wait to hear about the Masters swim. What is it? What do the do? The name sounds so professional which makes me wonder what makes a master. Age? Speed? Find out and tell us!

If I were to ever swim, I would think that a swimming class would be in my future - esp since I can't remember the last time I went swimming without a beer floating next to me.

Although, I'd probably have to start out in 'bubblers' with all of the 3rd graders.
