I was excited, yet apprehensive. My mind was flirting with positive thoughts, but cluttered with memories of my two triathlons, burning shins as soon as get into my run off the bike -- on FIRE!
Brick #1 of this training plan went fine two weeks ago, but I did have an unexpected gap in between the ride and run as I ran into some neighbors and stopped to chat... my mind tried telling me that it wasn't a real brick; no wonder I didn't have any pain.
It's funny how much planning goes into working out these days! Not only in fitting everything in which I discussed in my previous post, but getting everything organized! The plan was as follows: Cycling on my tri bike mounted on the trainer, change my clothes, run across the street, into the office building, up the escalator to the gym, drop jacket, start treadmill and run.
Garmin 305 unit in the quick release mount on the bike - check.
Garmin quick release strap on my wrist, ready to transfer from bike to wrist - check
ipod ready, playlist selected - check
changed into my cycling stuff - check
socks that I can wear to ride and run - check
heart rate monitor on - check
capri pants and top ready to get changed into quickly when off the bike - check
hat for my head to run across the street since I will already be sweating - check
jacket ready to go - check
running shoes by the door, ready to go - check
Water bottle ready to go, placed by my shoes so I won't forget it! - check
What, that doesn't count as part of the workout?! Pffft.
30 minutes on the bike passes by rather quickly, bike shorts off, capris on, tank top off, dry tank top on, switch Garmin to wrist, bike shoes off, running shoes on, hat on, run back to grab my ipod I had set down while changing, back to the door, shoes on, jacket on, triple check to make sure I also have my iPhone... yes, I have priorities... grab water bottle, and I'm finally out the door heading to the gym -- running! Check both ways before crossing the road, stopped to hold the door open for a elderly gentleman with a walker, eyes down to avoid eye contact with anyone familiar that might be around, run up the escalator, swipe my gym card which stays in my iPhone pouch. Phew! Good thing I went back for it! Head straight for the treadmill while I'm switching my Garmin from bike to run mode, drop my jacket, and I'm setting up the treadmill for a 60 minute steady run! Transition time, 7 minutes, 46 seconds!
I ran the full 60 minutes with no calf or shin pain at all! During my last triathlon, I walked more than I ran in the short 5k distance due to the intense burning -- even walking was painful! I was glowing by the end of the brick -- it was done!
While my mood was elevated, the little mental negativity kicked in later on -- 'all good on a treadmill, but whatcha got for a real run on the roads?'
Brick #3 was Tuesday, yesterday... which would happen to be another milestone! 45 min higher cadence ride, followed immediately by a faster (this term is relative, people! haha) 10 minute run. My planning and process as described above was the same, except that instead of changing into capris and a tank top for a treadmill run, I needed tights, an Under Armour Cold Gear top -- both which can be difficult to put on while already sweaty by the way -- and gloves. Since my stress fractures, this is the first time I was attempting any sort of back to back days of running. Knowing it would only be a 10 minute run, it really didn't make me nervous.
I felt great! I was bounding over puddles! It was my fastest run since injury, probably because I knew it would be over quickly, but completely forgetting that I had run the day before! The best part is, no burning!
So, I'm not sure if things are going so much better because:
- I'm riding the new tri bike while training? Is it that much better fit for me (even though I had proper bike fits done on both my road and tri bike), or are tri bikes that different?
- Has following this training plan pretty diligently done what it was supposed to? Am I just better conditioned, and better trained?
Somewhat rhetorical questions, and I'm really not seeking an answer... I'm just going to keep riding this wave as far as it'll take me! I'm stoked!

Nice work! Keep on going!!!!
Your transition sounds like me getting ready to run with T Junior. LOL! So happy there was no pain!
Why do you think your shins aren't burning anymore? Mine too, were on fire when I did my triathlon. When is your next triathlon and what distance is it? I'm sure you mentioned it but I forget. :-/
Great work and good news that you've got no shin pain anymore. Love your description of a transition.
Wow, I'm impressed.......
Way to go! Your pre-workout prep made me sweat!
You are just rocking these bricks Mel! Great job. So cool that you can just run across the street to the treadmill.
That'sss some intense workout. Where do you get your workouts from? A team? Coach? Trainer? After my 50-states I would love to get into sprint tri's and work my way up.
Nice work, this is going to pay off and make your races so much easier cuz of this hard work
i am the opposite, my roadie is way more comfortable then my tt, i dunno why
Good job Mel, you are in much better shape than this time last year (I don't mean that in a bad way). and yes, tri bikes are that much more different than roadbikes...
Good job on the transitions.
great job.
i think it's all of the above, better bike fit and better conditioning.
Whatever you are doing right, it must be working. YAY for Brick success. And nice job on the super speedy run!
(Holy crap, a lot of prep and planning goes into this tri training!)
That IS a lot of coordination. It sounds like a lot of fun. Keep up the awesome workouts!
Yay! Congrats on the pain free bricks, that's great news.
Too many variables to determine why – JUST TAKE IT –
BETTER – STRONGER – FASTER!!!
Congrats on your bricks! Wow you are tough! Can't begin to imagine all the orchestration that goes into training for and doing a tri!
Those bricks cannot be easy. That prep is more than it takes to go camping, which I consider to be very high on the preparation scale.
Congratulations! Great workouts. I'm glad you like your Tri bike so much. I was always under the impression that tri bikes are just more efficient in general... maybe that is why it feels so much better? Or maybe you are just reaching a new level. :)
Congrats again.
Sounds like a busy schedule!! Keep it up!
I love when I feel great after a workout!!!! Great job!
I'm so impressed with your dedication! I'm not a big bike person although I love spin class when I have time to get there. Also, it's always good to switch up your training and I honestly believe that if you are working hard for your training plan it will benefit you. I think you already know that from your shins!
I'm so happy for you reading this post. Hope the fire stays out!
D. All of the above, that's my answer. You're more fit and the bike really IS that different!
You said it!! SO much planning and work goes into the set-up alone.
Awesome job girl!
Girl you are a machine! I don't know how you do it!
you are doing amazing lady - keep it up!!!
YAY!!!
I'd be so self conscious going to the gym already sweaty. What will people think?
Then again people are probably thinking that already when they see me running around in the cold dark winter with my headlight and hydration backpack under my windbreaker ;)
Wow girl you go! Look at you now and how far you have come. You are an inspiration and keep it going!
it's not about the bike mel... duh! you are just awesome :)
yeah if i had to do a transition i'd definitely take my sweet time. i'm a natural putz-er...
Keep on riding that wave! Rock on, mel!
Hooray for successful, pain free bricks! I was laughing reading about your transition set-up...ha ha...so true!
Wow, these workouts sound intense...and you're doing great with them. Keep it up!!
Hey, it's working, so that's great in itself!
Nice job! Long may this continue!
YES!!!! Wow, so GLAD that your are riding a high wave right now - those positive endorphins are going to carry you far mentally!! you are better conditioned and it's showing quite nicely here, girl! I am smiling wide for you right now. :)
Have a great weekend!!!
Gah! How did I get this far behind on blogs.....
That is awesome about the brick!! I really wonder how much the Tri-bike helps. I'll bet a lot if it fits you better.
