Game of Survivor!

Being the 4th of January, the gym is full of them. You know who they are; they're easy to pick out. The ones that have made a New Year's Resolution, are in there for the first time, or after finding their existing gym membership card from last year's failed attempt. You likely won't see them again after a few weeks.

No, I didn't win a million dollars or have my flame put out, but tonight's treadmill run felt like a game of Survivor.  Let me explain.

Scheduled endurance building run on the training plan for tonight, 1h20 min non-stop run. I've never done that before -- certainly not since injury.  Since it was supposed to be in my zone 1 (which because of my naturally high heart rate would mean walking, I figured zone 2 will work....an easy slow run. Picked a speed on the treadmill which fell in the middle of my zone 2 heart rate range hoping that I could last the entire 80 minutes.

When I arrived, there were 2 empty treadmills, one of them being right between two people walking. Soon after I started those two left, as did some of the others... all fresh faces now on the treadmills. About 35 minutes into my run, this teenage-looking guy gets on the treadmill next to mine, fumbles with a few of the buttons, and gets off, deciding to get onto the elliptical instead.

The treadmill stops after 60 minutes, so I straddled the belt after pushing the stop button to try to reset it as quickly as possible to get back to running. Less than a minute later, I'm running at the same pace I started, tackling the last 20 minutes.  That same guy's friend comes over to the same treadmill he had attempted earlier, looks at my screen, overhear him shout to his friend that he was going to run for 10 minutes through the music on my ipod.  He looked at my screen again, fumbled with the buttons until he's satisfied with his speed. Within 20 seconds, he's pushing the up arrow to increase his pace, constantly glancing at my screen. I mentioned that my pace was pretty slow... it was, and yes, he was going faster... but by this point, I had already run for about 64 minutes, with another 16 left to go. He continues to increase his pace, glancing at mine, almost like he wants to initiate a race, to see if I'll feel defeated enough to pick mine up... but I didn't.

I didn't because I had already won... his hands were now on the rails, holding up his body, his breathing labored, beads of sweat are building and dripping on his brow, he's looking like he's close to his puke-threshold. He slammed down on the stop button like he was playing a game of jeopardy, and nearly slid off the treadmill, the time on the screen reading 1:13.  Yes, one minute, 13 seconds.

I outwitted him by picking a speed that I could maintain for my planned duration. I outplayed him by sticking to my original plan and not letting my ego get in the way, and I outlasted him by 78:47! At least it provided some entertainment and made my treadmill run somewhat enjoyable!  :)

I also wanted to share the following with you all. My friend Jerry will soon embark on an incredible journey. He's currently serving in Afghanistan with the US Army, counting down the days until he comes home mid-march. Days later, he will be starting an amazing charity run; 26 marathons and 1 Ironman within a year to raise money for Freedom is not Free, a charity that helps disabled veterans and the families of fallen soldiers. Please check out his website 262forsoldiers, and if you can help him with your support and a donation, I know he'd be grateful.  Hope you all had a fantastic Monday!

Ha! I LOVE this story. Ha ha ha.

It cracks me up when people try to start running and just take off. You've got to build up your endurance and speed!

I would have been pretty annoyed. You handled it so well!

First: yours is one of my favorite blogs.

Second: I'm sorry I've ignored my google reader.

Ok for the comments...
I've never had this experience at a gym, but I have during a race. I see these people sprint from the starting line. I think "no way they can keep this pace, they are booking!". About a mile down the road, I pass them. I'm still running, they are now walking.

Good job keeping your cool! :) And WELL DONE on running for 80 minutes...that's awesome!

Wow that is an amazing journey!!

I have been sick, so I haven't been to the gym this week but I know what I am in for and it makes me nuts!!! I am all for people getting healthy, honestly, but it is frustrating that I get the crap end because everything is full. And somehow when I write that, it seems much meaner that I intend!

Good job woman! Very cool about your friend too!

oh this is just fantastic! so funny, and so true. ahhhh, if i wasn't sick right now, i would have had to deal with the new years resolutioners...i mean good for them, but still, all up in our business ;) nice run btw! yay.

Awesome job! These next few weeks drive me crazy at the gym. And people who do that are the reason! At least it makes for a fun story!!!

Ha Ha! I love the people at the gym! During my long runs I see some people there for over an hour who accomplish absolutely nothing, but apparently can still claim they were at the gym for an hour! I haven't been yet in the new year but I bet it is packed full of 'resolutioners'. Anyway, congrats on the run and not getting caught up in the hoopla! I'm off to check out the website!!

OMG! I was laughing while reading this blog! That is so funny about the guy on the treadmill. Poor guy had to walk away with his tail between his legs. Hopefully, for his sake, he'll hang in there and learn from others (like you).

What an awesome cause for your friend to embark on!

Anyway, as always, I enjoyed your post... thanks for the laugh!

LMAO!! That is so funny! I am dreading the gym, although ours is full of students and they don't come back for two more weeks. It should be quiet for a little while longer.

NICE WORK!!!!!!!

Good job keeping your pace and working out that run. Thats why you are a triathlete, and that guy, well, in a week or so, you will never see him again.

hahaha. i love this story :) way to go!! i won't lie, i felt like a cool kid running at the gym last night and hearing/seeing all the newbie's around me. one old guy was "does 6 miles everyday" except i've never seen him before, AND he kept straddling the belt (while it was still going) to catch his breath. haha. gotta love the people who count the mileage the treadmill runs for them :)

I always think about Survivor when I am on the treadmill. :) I don't get why everyone is always trying to bump their pace until they are above mine. I usually outlast everyone except the few amazing runners, but then I can just think I am almost as awesome as them.

Heather said...

That's awesome! You totally beat him. Way to get in such a long run on the treadmill - impressive!

Stuart said...

That's too funny! I fully expect to see that on my trips to the gym!

Just goes to prove steady wins the race!

Hee hee - that's excellent - well done on showing him up! My circuit class last Sunday was stacked with newbies - they all made it through just about though! Oddly the spinning class this morning was half empty with only one newbie in it though... guess spinning may be a bit too daunting for the resolutioners!

OMG, i love it!!! Awesome job with the long run on the treadmill!

heheh!!! i enjoyed this story thoroughly. way to outwit and outplay. i think you are incredible for running 80 minutes straight. i haven't done that in months. nor have i ever done it on a treadmill. i like the takeaway message- run YOUR run :) i agree.

LOL! Love it! True and steady wins the race!

Although to be honest, I will never understand treadmill running.

LOL!!! Too freakin' funny. I love how New Year's brings em out. It's truly a game of Survivor. We'd be a better country if people really did think they could win something by getting healthy.

I love that!!! I had a girl do that to me once. I wanted to go faster, but I stuck to my slow pace and yep. Same thing...she burned out before me!

Your friend is awesome!!!! Marathoners amaze me. And what a great cause!

Haha, I LOVE It. Gyms are so great.

Haha 1:13 on the treadmill, that's hilarious. Great job on your endurance workout, that is a toughie to do especially on the mill!!

Stephanie Nichole said...

omigosh that's hilarious about that guy!!! I CANNOT believe you can run that long on a treadmill... I get SO unbelieveably bored. I'll have to get better though because the eliptical just isn't the same thing and its getting far too cold outside!

Great post!

omg i hate seeing the resolutioners come in. it's depressing every year. they can't leave fast enough.

at least you got to school that one. well done!

Classic Mel! It is so true. I am sure WW was easily as busy!

Thanks for the wishes on the hills. I hate them LMAO!

Weight Watchers is full of "them" also. Sad, but I can usually tell who will stick it out and who will quit coming after a month since they don't lose the weight quickly enough. Great "Survivor" story, and I'll check out the 262for soldiers site. By the way, thanks for motivating me to go run yesterday. I gave you a shoutout in my blog. :-)

I love (kidding) the gym at resolution time. At least they give us something to entertain us! Good work on the run, girl! Long treadmill runs aren't easy but sometimes mandatory.
Happy Thursday!

Treadmill racing? Too funny, love your story and I know all too well those types at the gym. Don't worry, just gotta stick through the month and they'll be gone.

I'm off to learn more about your soldier friend!

Happy New Year and I'm sure you will continue to amaze us like you always have.

thanks for sharing your friend's site, will def check it out...I don't miss January in the gym at all, one of the pluses of being home with the kids is my basement treadmill!

I HATE those jokers that want to race me. It kills me - in the pool on a suckmill. Leave me alone buddy - I've been here ALL YEAR. Well not on the suckmill, but I've been working out all year, back OFF!

IzzyBubbles said...

This cracks me up!! I always get those people who want to speed up and pass me on the indoor track - I usually think "go ahead, buddy - you'll quit and walk in a lap or so and I'll still be running 30 minutes later." And that's usually what happens. Darn resultion time at the gym, it's so irritating!

Marlene said...

I love this spin on Survivor! You certainly outwitted, outplayed and outlasted him. Congrats on the awesome long run! 1:20 on the treadmill??? I bow down to you!
