Swim, Bike, Run, Rinse, Repeat.

Life has been hectic lately!! Whew!! It's Tuesday, and this week has worn me down already. With only 4 more sleeps until Disney for Terron and I, though, the mini-meltdown I had last night was neither unexpected or long-lasting.

Figured I should catch you up on a few things...

Swim -- Sunday night's swim was interesting to say the least. Sitting there watching Terron's swim class before mine, I was wondering how I would possibly stay awake for mine. Got my second wind as I hit the water thankfully. Led the lane during our 800m warm up before coach started talking. Remember in my previous post when I mentioned that I hate being the center of attention. That's the last time I mention that... haha. After warm up was done, he was talking to us about his plan for building endurance, and how he has a passive way to correct our strokes. "... and Melanie, who has only been with us for about the last 8 or so weeks, has improved dramatically without even barely saying a word!"  Thanks coach..... oh great. Everyone is looking at me. Feeling strong that night, I continued to lead the lane for the rest of the workout. He said it was an easy night, an easy night it was not.  After some hard kick sets, coach approached me as I pulled myself out of the pool at the deep end. "Um, you ARE signing up for the Burlington swim meet right?" I gave him a half smile, raised my eyebrow a bit, and asked if my 'wanting to spectate' excuse would work again. He said no, and that he wanted and needed me to compete with the team!! What a confidence booster!

Then the pin that deflated the ego..... thankfully something about which I can laugh. At the deep end, coach split us up in to 6 relay teams of 4. I was in the second heat, lane 6, wall to my left. First relay was 50m free. No problem.  Except that I'd have a huge one. I have a really hard time with my goggles flipping up when I dive in, so I tried putting them under my cap.  Ugh, they still completely flipped off. As I came up, I quickly tried to empty them mid-stroke...but ended up with a goggle full of water. Sometimes I might still be able to see, but not this time, I was wearing my contacts and they were burning.... I had no idea where I was going, how far until I would reach the end, except that I was totally going crooked and swam into the wall. Yep, the wall on my left.... Took that moment to empty out the goggles and continued on my merry way. Got back, and one of the girls asked if I was ok... she laughed hysterically when I told her what had happened, as did I.  Despite my little blunder, we STILL won that relay! :D I'm signing up for the swim meet. February 7th. Gulp.

Bike -- January 16th. Toronto, Canada. Typically we have feet of snow on the ground, with a wind chill in the minus teens or twenties. I wish there was someone to take a picture. Home alone saturday morning, above zero temperatures, beautiful sun shining, and a 40min ride on the trainer scheduled. I contemplated for about 5 minutes, then made my decision. It took about 15 minutes to have my tire changed from the indoor one to my regular tire, I was taking my new tri bike for it's first ride on the road! I was excited and nervous. Happy and worried. UA Cold Gear tights, bike shorts, UA Cold Gear hooded top, bright orange race shirt, black cycling jersey with fall colored leaves on the back, UA beanie for under my helmet, shoe covers, thick cycling gloves. Ready to roll. So EXCITED!!!  I got maybe 500 meters from home, approaching a traffic light which was red, so I coasted along. I look to my left as I hear a voice... and older lady sitting in her fur coat and fur hat, gloved hands calls out the window "I love your outfit!!" I waved, said thank you, and wanted to say but what about this sweet bike?! But I'm sure she wouldn't understand.  As we both started moving forward from our standstill, she waved again as she accelerated.  Too funny... nothing like looking cute while having fun!  Few things I noticed on my bike. I use my quads a WHOLE lot more than when I was on my roadie.  Wonder if I used my calves more on that bike, maybe contributing to the burning of my shins while running afterwards? Hmmm.  I also had Shimano SPD pedals on my road bike -- I could clip into it on either side; now I have Look Keo full carbon pedals, which I can clip into on one side only. Will need to get used to this.... had a few awkward starts from a red light. Being in aero on this bike-- so much more comfortable... it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship :)  I only rode for an hour as I was getting cold.... took most of the day afterwards to warm up, but I was STOKED to have that first ride outside

Run -- Dear Treadmill.
Many people don't like you, I, on the other hand, have tried to defend you, even on this blog, to point out some of your good qualities! The warmth you provide being indoors during the cold winter months, your consistency, helping me keep pace. And this is how you repay me?? If this doesn't change, our relationship will suffer, and I will have no option but to sever all ties with you effective immediately. I've been *almost* exclusive to you during this base building phase... but the few short runs I have had outdoors have been glorious. I'll tell you why. Even with the wind, the hills, the cold, the changing scenery, my pace is where I imagined I would be. But with you, treadmill, you SUCK! Maybe it's me, but don't get your hopes up, but know that you're walking a very thin line with right now, very thin.
Signed, Faster Than You're Telling Me

Anyone else have this issue? I'm not fast.... but I don't get it.  Perceived effort while running outdoors with all the elements, etc seem lower while my speed is higher.  Treadmill, my pace is very slow for a higher perceived effort.  If I were to set the treadmill up to match my outside pace, I can't hold it very long!! What's up with that?  Is it because I can't visualize it, the scene doesn't change, and the monotony of it all? Is it me?!  (If it is, please don't tell the treadmill, I wouldn't want him to have the satisfaction of knowing...)

So that, my friends, is what I've been up to! Yes, I'm still doing P90X.. in fact, today, I finished week 4. This week was a recovery week, and admittedly I missed two of the workouts due to time constraints... I've mentioned before that on the workout side of things, my tri stuff is more important to me at the moment... so if it's a choice of doing nothing, tri workout and/or P90X.. I will always try to fit in at least my scheduled run/ride/swim.

I will be in lurking and catch up mode until I'm back from vacation, I'll try to comment as much as I can! Be safe!!

You're not alone on the treadmill issue - at any given pace my HR is about 10-15 points higher on it than outdoors. Not entirely sure what it is, or even whether it's physiological (modified gait due to different surface, lack of fresh air, reduced pace/grade variance putting all the load on one set of muscles, etc.) or psychological (lack of distractions, droning noise, etc.) but it's definitely harder.

Either way, I hate the treadmill more than I do the cold so it takes a lot to make me even consider using it :oP

Good luck at your swim meet and have a great trip.

You are keeping yourself busy! I have the same issue on the mill... so frustrating.

Have a great time in DW!

Ooooh lady I'm feeling ya on the treadmill. I know they're boring and it seems to take forever, but it honestly IS taking forever-- like minutes per mile longer than it should! IDK what's up with that... I try to blame it on my height and tell myself that the machine is made for non-almost-midget people. haha

So impressed on the swimming (even with the small blunder) I would have panicked and drown or something. I've been trying to get into swimming... its just so hard to build a base. The road and trails are wear I belong... at least for now :)

Awesome how the lady liked your outfit! You are one tough cookie to be on the bike in this cold. Nice job. Disney is so close!!! You and Terron are going to have a blast.

The treadmill always lies to me, too. Sucky 'mill.

My new bike hasn't been outside yet. I thought about it today but it looked like it might rain (new bike and rain will not mix for some time). I chose wisely and rode inside since when I got off the trainer the ground was damp.

Enjoy Florida. I'm sure I chased the "once in a lifetime" cold spell out for you!

And folks say that I'm busy! At least you're busy with fun stuff!!
Great to be riding in the dead of winter, I almost took Fred for a ride, but as usual, the weather folks lied the other day and the sun never came out to help heat things up.
Have a great time on vacation!!!

I loved your post! I have the exact same problem with the dreadmill! Most of my friends run faster on the TM than outside, but I'm the opposite and I don't know why either..it just sucks!

I'm glad you got to go on a ride with your new tri bike. It took me about 15min. to get into the aero position on my tri bike the first time I rode outside (ha ha). Even though I had clip on aerobars on my roadie the aero position on my tri bike is a totally different animal!

HAVE A GREAT VACATION YOU BUSY LADY!!!

I totally forgot that you had your special rubber trainer tire on. I'll bet getting your new bike out on the road again was totally worth the tire change.

Well, like it or not, I'm going to be on the treadmill tomorrow. Stupid California rain... :)

love the swim-update! too funny about crashing into the side wall, niiiice ;)

the treadmill and i have been working on our relationship for over a year now and it has improved for the most part. sometimes i definitely feel like i am struggling to maintain my easy pace and other days it feels "normal". i feel like it's mostly mental... i have a much "easier" time running on newer, beefy treadmills than older, cruddy ones :)

You've been busy busy busy with the workouts! bike ride OUTSIDE in JANUARY? Who'd a thunk it? LOL at being complimented on your outfit. :)

I used to find that my perceived effort on the TM felt much more difficult. I only use it once every few weeks now so I can't really say. I have no explanation, but hopefully your dearest treadmill will stop playing tricks on you.

ALMOST TIME FOR DISNEY!

Yep, treadmills lie. :)

Stupid, lying, cheating dreadmills, i hate them and I also hating running in the cold, what is one to do.

YEEESSSS! I'm totally with you! I have NO speed on the treadmill. I mentioned it to my coach the other day cause it's killing me. I'm trying to stay off it as much as possible./

Jo Lynn said...

I don't do treadmills. Sorry.

Have fun in Disney World. I hope the weather cooperates for you. ;)

I'm so envious that you got to ride outside! There is just too much ice and gravel on the side of the roads here. I think it will be awhile before my bike gets to see the great outdoors!

I have a love/hate relationship with the dreadmill as well...but being home with my kids, sometimes that's all I can fit in!

have a great vacation mel. i know you guys will both love disney.

being forced into a swim meet is awesome! i can't believe you're making so much progress so quickly! well done girl.

and the tri bikes are totally different frame geometry from the road bikes. i use the shimano spd pedals too and love it. but the wheelbase is shorter and the seatstem is more upright so you get a lot more power with each stroke. that's why your quads were on fire. it's a good burn though.

and i get the same thing. i hover consistently around a 9 min mile on the treadmill for any decent distance, then regularly clock in 8 minute miles or faster running outside. it's freaky. i like the tm to get more control over pace and speed, but then lose it when i get outside. and yes outside is more visually stimulating too.

Alisa said...

Awesome that you got in a ride outside. I'm hoping the weather clears a little for Saturday and I can ride outside too!

As for the treadmill, I'm not a treadmill hater =). I actually feel like I'm faster on the treadmill. However, like all running, it depends on the day. I have good days and bad days on the 'mill and outside. The one thing I really like about the treadmill is it keeps my pace consistent!

EndorphinBuzz said...

Love your title today. Training for a tri often felt like that for me. Now it's all about run run run and run some more as I train for a marathon.

I liked the story about your goggles, too funny.

I find the treadmill easier than the equivalent run for anything under 15 minutes at any speed but anything over 15 minutes and the treadmill gets really boring for me...

Very cool about competing in the swim meet! I hope to do that someday but would have to learn how to dive from the platform, and I'm not very fond of diving, period.

And I've heard that treadmill speeds are notoriously inaccurate, esp. the less expensive home models. That said, I too usually find running a certain pace outdoors is easier than indoors.

Hope you have a great vacation. Looks like we're sort of trading places as I'm heading north this weekend.

Nice work, especially with the swimming. It sounds like you are a natural. The meet sounds very fun. Have a great vacation!
