I can

I subscribe to Runner's World's 101 Kick in the Butt, so every morning, I get an email with a quote.

Yesterday's really made me think though.  "A marathon is like life with its ups and downs, but once you've done it you feel that you can do anything." Anonymous

Funny thing is, I still don't consider myself a marathoner. I got to 36k/22-ish miles of one last May, but I did not cross the finish line, didn't get my finisher's medal, instead, getting my Mother's Day roses in the medical tent. Had I not been injured going into the race, I'm hopeful that the day would have ended differently.

Regardless, I learned a lot about myself that day, even before, and since then. Crossing the finish line is not what has made me feel like I can do anything; the journey to that day, and the choices I continue to make, do.

I think that quote could be changed to say "running a race" or any distance! You learn so much about yourself not just through the race, but like you said, with the training.

So funny - I get those emails too and had a different quote yesterday!

I'm going to register there too. I would love to get my butt kicked daily.

Even though I've never run a marathon, I háve been running for eight years now. And I still don't really feel like a runner...

i agree with kilax, you can learn and grow from a run/race of any distance...doesn't have to be a marathon...i need to subscribe to those quotes, didn't know they had that....

That's a great quote, but I agree that it can be perceived differently. It's not all about the finish line!

Girl, you did all the training, you ran all the miles, you were there and you were so close, 6k close. That to me means you DID IT.

As a matter of fact you have achieved many marathons that this life has thrown your way...you (won) beat them all.

You will cross the finish line of a marathon and I'll be there to cheer you on!

Amen! Even though I didn't finish my first Ironman (or even get as far as you did on your marathon), I felt like my biggest strides were already made in the journey to get to the start line of the race.

Yeah, the journey is the thing. It toughens you, introduces you to yourself in a different way.

Even though I haven't done a marathon yet (I'm doing Rock-n-Roll Denver this fall), I can just replace the word "marathon" with "half ironman" and it totally works for me! I think it's an awesome quote and so true. :)

So true! Keep on keeping on girl!

I like that quote, but I totally agree with you - the journey gives you that confidence that you can do anything.

"A marathon is like life with its ups and downs, but once you've done it you feel that you can do anything": I totally agree, this was my feeling after my first marathon.

Ummm, isn't it time that you attempted another marathon? I mean you're kicking ass in the tri's, so why not train and "tri" another marathon? I have complete confidence in you, Mel.

Marathoning is really funny that way. I truly do believe that it is mostly about the journey. When you think about it, most training plans have you running 400+ miles (or however KM ;) so the race at the end is just the finish… What I mean by that is that I would consider you a marathoner.
