Remember when running was only something you did to get away from something just a little bit faster?
Remember when swimming meant running into the lake to cool off from making sandcastles or doing cannonballs into the deep end of the pool?
Remember when going for a bike ride was on something like this?
Remember when 6k seemed like a long run?
Remember your first fall when you forgot that your feet were clipped in?
Remember getting a mouthful of water and the burning sensation of water up the nose when you attempted your first flip turn?
Remember the many times your mind probably told you that you couldn't?
Remember when you signed up for your first triathlon, and the 350m swim seemed daunting?
Remember training for your first event, toeing the line, then getting your first finisher's medal?
These were the thoughts going through my head tonight as I swam... 800m was my warm up! Ya, thinking while doing laps make me lose count, thankfully someone else was on the ball tonight! :)
I think it's important to look back at all our accomplishments, recognize the things we've chosen to do and appreciate the hard work and investment we put in ourselves sometimes.

You are awesome, and have many many accomplishments to be proud of :)
I remember all of those, except the flip turn one. It is on my list of things to learn this spring. Glad you take time to appreciate your journey. I will do the same!
Great post, Mel. :)
Ha, you got me with the flip turn..... water up the nose.
Great Post. I couldn't agree more.
Love this post! :)
Oh boy, the falling while clipped in seems so fresh in my mind.... ;-)
It takes 20 years to become an overnight success!
It's always great to look back at the steps we took to reach our higher ground!
Congrats on all and I totally had a bike that your picture! Except my back sissy bar was a tall one!
Loved that bike-if only they put banana seats on tri bikes-we'd have it made!
Love this post! It's so true we chip away and seldom take time to realize the magnitude of our accomplishments.
My bike was metallic purple with big daisies on the banana seat!
thanks for helping me remember all of those wonderful experiences that seem to be so far in the past. Great to always remember where, how and why we started and how far we've come.
way to put things in perspective.
:-)
I try to remember all those and more everyday. Thanks for the reminders and smile!
:)
Thanks for this. I had a bike like that bit wore it out. Now my bikes wear me out :)
Ahaha, the banana seat! That's the extent of my cycling experience. And my swimming experience usually involves a pool noodle. :)
Great post... it's always a good feeling to look back on how far we've come.
Hey that was my bike! Only with streamers coming from the handlebars. I love this list; I remember all of these things. We all have come such a long way. But I sometimes miss the simpler days when a bike ride was just a bike ride.
PS: I did your swim workout the other day, the one with the 7 x 150s @4 min. It was GREAT. Thanks.
SOOOOOO true!
I was thinking about my very first 5k the other day (since I have one on Sunday) and thinking how it was no pressure, I just went for it. I wasn't in tech clothes, I didn't know what a Garmin was, I think I wore Nike's from Costco and I had a BLAST. I still have that race shirt---it's got holes in it and probably should be retired but I just can't give it up.
Love this! Looking back is so important; it is a lot of why I keep "week in reviews" and etc so I can alway shave something to look at for progress sake.
I love the questions. It brought back a lot of memories :-) Have a great weekend!
I love this, it was nice walking down memory lane
Great post, Mel!
Just the picture of the bike brought back memories of my best friend in the 3rd grade. She had THAT bike and it was so cool.
Thanks, Mel! You're so incredible - a true inspiration to me! Happy Weekend!
excellent post and thoughts mel :) sometimes we (esp me!) get caught up in chasing our goals and being hard on ourselves to remember how far we've come and that this is all supposed to be for FUN.
Sooo important to look back.
I laughed at that bike, I had a lilac purple banan seat bike I LOVED it!! When I first got it I di dnot know how to ride. My older sister, who knew how to ride a bike, asked if she could take it down the block. I did not want her too but reluctantly said yes. She drove down and back and ran into the light pole busting the reflector on the front of the bike. WHAT?? I still have never let her live that down.
Congrats on tackling your 3 sports... So much work!!
You've come a long way! For me (since I don't tri), it's remembering when my first race (an 8k) seemed so LONG. ;o)
The other day I was telling a friend how I will now think "only 30 mins left to run!" when before I was working up to running that long. It's amazing! And it's important to remember our accomplishments when we are feeling down.
I must tell you Mel...one of my inspirations for even considering a tri is you...you are so persistent, so resilient...you have come such a long way. Keep going strong!
Nice!
I never had a bike that cool before!
Great post! 800M is quite the warmup! :)
Thanks for bringing back the first steps to me again. What memories of some epic rides.

Mel, you are truly amazing. I've been swimming for 5 years now and can only hope I to be able to swim an 800 as a warm-up some day.
Awesome! I swam 800 as my entire workouts . . . someday. :)
Perfect!
I'm just about to go and do Yoga in a hot room for 90 minutes for the first time and ... guess what? It's daunting. I'll add it to your list one day. :-)
awesome post. Thanks for sharing these thoughts!
love this post
When we start reminiscing, does that mean we are getting old.....remember when we didnt reminisce.....lol
