We have been absolutely spoiled this weekend by Mother Nature. Nothing but beautiful sunshine... so yesterday, I took my bike out for some quality one-on-one time. A windy, hilly 33k ride -- amazing.
It's funny how big yet small the running community is. I've been running for about two and a half years, and in that time, have made some very amazing friends. Today I felt a little like a rockstar though! Let's see, other than the group I met at the shuttle bus stop (Ann, Alvin, Sonya, Stephanie, Tina, Domenica, Flora), I also bumped into running friends Marlene, Mark, Patricia, Ueli, Jackie (or was it her twin sister....), Bev, Pete, Colin, Heather, Bruce, and finally got to MEET Marci! Last year, I somehow spotted Marci on the out 'n back portion (she was obviously on the 'back'), called out her name hoping she'd respond and she did! Today, she picked me out of the crowd in the start corral before the start of the race! Was so great to finally meet and chat with her.I ran with Ann, one of the runners I met through the half marathon clinic 2 years ago... the other half of Team Anamoly for the 30k relay race in 3 weeks! We seem to have a similar pace, neither of us are very chatty while running, and just run well together.
The Chilly Half Marathon is appropriately named -- let's face it, the weather is pretty unpredictable this time of year! Wearing a UA Cold Gear shirt, a t-shirt overtop, it didn't take long to ditch my throw away jacket. We started at a decent pace, but felt my shins burning just a bit in the first 3k. That's when my mind starts panicking and going into a protective mode. I kept mentioning to Ann that I might need to start slowing down.... she kept waiting for it, but our pace stayed surprisingly steady! This year's course was an out and back, and I much preferred this to the route from 2 years ago.
At 18k, we passed a church, where a priest was standing outside cheering on the runners. Ann asked for a blessing, at which time she got a huge burst of energy and took off ahead. It's so funny, because it was at this point that she surged ahead during our first half marathon in 2008, and helped pull me together in SF during Nike! I had no time goals for this race... I knew it was unlikely that I'd get a PR as I've only been running twice weekly, and haven't really hit half marathon training distances very much. I was still in my happy range though, finishing in 2:13:18. My biggest goal was to not be limping away from the finish line like I did in 2008, or in the medical tent last May. Mission accomplished! :)
I took off shortly after the race, shuttle bus back to my car, drove back home to quickly shower and change, so that I could take Terron to a birthday party. I snuck away for about an hour to talk to a good friend on the phone, returned to the party room to the kids' having pizza and birthday cake. I declined both, and the offer to get an additional chair. I explained that I didn't want to sit for fear of stiffening up more after already spending an hour in the car after my half. Do you ever get this reaction? You tell someone that you're a runner, or that you've just raced an event, a 10k, a half, or a marathon, and they give you a once over? Look you up and down, then react? I actually take pride in it. Nope. I don't 'look' like a runner, but I do it anyway!

Nice work!!! You are a runner - who cares what other people think!
Awesome job on the half! It's great to have so many friends that run.
Good job, well done!
Cheers from Hong Kong!
"XTB" Xavi.
Yay! Way to go! Runner Girl!
And, yep, I get that all the time. I am certainly not built like a runner at all.
Great race! I am so happy you finished feeling great (well, as great as you can) and skipping the medical tent!
Oh gosh. People say and do all sorts of unexpected things when you tell them you are a runner... I've come to laugh at it and encourage them to give it a try!
congrats! What a great time too!
I can't wait for my first race of the season this coming weekend. It's just a 5K, but it's still the "atmosphere" of a race!
Looking great Mel....this sounds like it's going to be "your" year!
nice work at the race! i love the medal with the pink ribbon. this weekend WAS wonderful, sunny and got some great riding in too. i think the main reason i run marathons is for the reaction i get from others, especially co-workers. always makes my day! have a great week of training Mel!
Congrats Mel! It was great seeing you before the race, and so glad you and Marci finally got to meet!
Sounds like you ran a strong and smart race. Well done!!
(I happen to think you DO look like a runner.....)
Congratulations! How are you feeling today...hopefully great! :)
I *am* training for a half marathon and I doubt I'll finish that fast. If I ever get to race somewhere other than 5000ft above sea level, then maybe, but up here, I doubt it.
Great job!
Great race! I get that once-over too, or at least I feel like I do because I'm not the typical tiny elite looking runner. That's one thing I love about races, you see all ages/shapes/sizes/etc out there working towards the common goal of the finish line.
Incredible Mel! Another exciting weekend! Congrats!
Whoohoo! Awesome job Mel and yes, I've gotten the "once over" many times, when I tell people what I'm training for. LOL
your such a rockstar
you absolutely do look like a runner!! and a tri athlete!
great job, love the medal!
Congrats - you so look like a runner. I saw that Priest as well...it was one of those double-take things when I saw him. (worried I was hallucinating at that point)
Congratulations on your race Mel!!!
I so know what you mean about the once over. Oh well,we get out there and we run, so that is all that matters, right?
Have a great week!
I HATE people who do the look over. I can get on my soap box about this stuff.
You should be thrilled with your HM result. Only running 2 days a week and finishing with that time shows where your fitness is.
The look-over...back handed compliments...yeah, I have gotten them both! But you did great and should be proud of yourself (I know you are!) for all you have done!
Ps- this weather is a total tease but I am loving it!
Excellent job no the race girly! Loved that last line by the way! You are def a runner!
Congrats on a great half marathon! Way to go.
I'm so glad you had a good injury-free run! You are more than a runner... you are a strong triathlete!! Hard. core.
Great meeting you, hope I get to again in the near future, I'll be at ATB too!
You, my dear, look amazing!!! Sounds like you had a great run :)
Nice! And to me, you def look like a runner.
Congratulations, Mel! Wonderful job. Beautiful pics too. You look so like a runner.
Congratulations!! Great job!
Great job! Sounds like you had a blast and that bike is just money!
Nicely done, Mel! Congratulations :)
Way to go!!! Awesome time :-)
You look like a runner to me!
Congratulations. :)
Great job! I would be soooooooo freakin' thrilled with a 2:13. I know you have a PR in you and staying injury free is totally key to that.
Congrats!
Lookin' smokin' in that finish picture too. P90X is working for you!
congrats on a great race girlie!!!
congrats on a great (and pain-free) half! :) you are famous with all those people you know and ran into... can i get your autograph?
i dislike the "you really run?" look... you definitely need to be proud of yourself and ignore them!
Great job Mel!! That is a wonderful time and the fact that you still felt pretty good after is such a great thing.
Love the pictures!
Congrats on your race, Mel!!
All your activities seem to be keeping your fitness level quite high despite not running much. And you were smart not to sit down after that race. Avoid stiffness and break stereotypes :-)
Awesome job on the half, Mel!! Absolutely love that medal on you, very fitting!!!! :) Congrats!
Nice work! You got to meet up with a friend AND you finished without limping away! SCORE!
How did I miss this post?! Congrats on completing the half, and doing well. Yes, non-runners don't really understand us runners. I think it's called "Runner envy."
