Harry's 8k Spring Run-Off Race Report

I musta missed the memo, but I got lucky! While running Around the Bay last weekend, some of my running group was talking about a race they were running this weekend, Harry's Spring Run Off in High Park. Hey! I've got no plans! Hey! I've never ran an 8k race before! Hey! I've never been to High Park!

Checked the race site as soon as I got home, SOLD OUT. Next stop, local running store's forum to see if anyone was selling... BINGO! Scored an 8k bib from a very nice local runner who had sprained her ankle. :( Transferred her over the $$, she contacted the race director, all done.

Arrived at High Park yesterday morning, to an easy and quick packet pick-up! Corrals were color coded, but I lined up with a few of my friends, one section back.  Horn blast to start the race, and a few minutes later we were running along the hilly, sometimes narrow pathway of a beautiful park in the middle city. There were moments while running that felt like I was somewhere completely different, until I looked up and saw the CN Tower just beyond a few tall buildings!

I was feel great! I settled into a decent pace, and even passing a few people on some of the smaller rolling hills... weird, because hills are usually a mental battle for me! But with two major climbs, one immediately before the finish line, they were s-l-o-w going.

I managed to finish in 48:48, only 48 seconds beyond my hoped for time! Considering the challenging course, and the sudden summer like temperatures, with some humidity that we haven't had the chance to acclimatize to yet, I'm rather pleased!  What was awesome though, was being able to take my running skirt out from the bottom of my dresser drawer to wear at the beginning of April!!! The sleeves came off within the first km, but I was thankful to have them for afterwards after cooling down. Yes, I have white legs, I know :)

For an 8k race...this has gotta be the topper for bling!! Check it out! A long-sleeved tech-shirt, a hat and a big medal! Love it!

So, to Pam, who sadly, was injured and couldn't run this race, I thought about you out there. Having had to miss races due to injury, I know how bad it sucks. Heal up fast, and hope to see you on the roads soon! :)

Great race! I thought it good that they let you switch race entries. Most races here don't let you.

Lookin' good chica!

Excellent - pleased you liked the park. Being my local training park I know those hills a bit too intimately and they still kick my ass every time!

Congrats Mel! Awesome time for that tough course (woohoo for passing on hills!) and hot, sticky morning. I was sweating buckets out there.

Congratulations on the race!! Not to worry, once we can start riding outside in shorts soon then we'll be dealing with funny tan lines instead!

i was confused for a sec... i read marlene's race recap and then hit "next" on my google reader and i'm like wait this is the same race/park. but then my slow brain caught on :)

anyway... CONGRATS! 48 secs from your goal time is soo close. and you look incredible! it's ok about your white legs - you won't be leathery when you are old :)

Congrats on a great time. I love this race even though its a tough course. Its kind of cool to race in High Park given all the training runs and hill repeats that I run there.
