I've heard our neighborhood dubbed as Melrose Place; not because we're living in the lap of luxury or full of drama, but there's a group of about 15 of us, that have become great friends. Many summer evenings and nights were spent in the common park, consuming BEvERages... but I was usually the one that wouldn't drink, or might have only one because of an early morning run or ride or race. Occasionally they'd ask about my running, or whatever, but I try not to bore my non-running friends by only talking about that.
Today, something interesting happened, at a baby shower we threw for one of the neighbors. Sitting next to one of the girls, she turns to me, and says "I want to do the 10k Zoo Run!" This conversation soon got two other girls involved, who now also want to try to train for the 5k, and to which I'll commit! Awesome!
A short time later, with 12 of us in the room, the conversation somehow went from a weekend in Vegas to P90X... huh!? When some of them found out that I did it, and stuck with it for the 90 days AND have continued with Insanity, they were shocked! Talked about that for a bit... and now it seems that there may be a few willing to give it a try now!! Sweet!
Later still, one of the guys asked if Terron was still doing the Ride for Heart -- a local 25k, 50k, and 75k ride to raise money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. For some of my newer readers, this is a ride I wanted to do last year, but couldn't because of injury. Little did I know how much this would affect us only a few short months later, when Terron's father suddenly passed away at the age of 34 of a heart attack. My grandmother also had a stroke last week :( -- so I will be riding the 75k route to honor them both. Family, friends, and bloggers have helped me far exceed my initial fundraising goal of $500, so I've doubled it to $1000, currently sitting at $830 raised!! So, once again, a HUGE THANK YOU! Still time to help if you can by clicking here, no amount is too small, and is greatly appreciated! Looks like another 3 people will be signing up for the ride! YAY!!
People have called me inspiring after learning of my story. Having had the brain surgery for epilepsy, then quitting smoking; but most of the people I was with today don't know about that! They just know me as the one that runs, rides, swims, or works out! Who would have known that I could inspire other people by just being me, and doing the things I enjoy! That I had the 'power' to encourage others to do the same! I feel so incredibly proud right now...
Don't think you inspire anyone? You're probably wrong!!! Maybe they just haven't told you yet!! Who are you inspiring without even knowing? :)

very nice post!
That's awesome Mel. I hope I am inspiring someone.
Woman what do you think we've been telling you????? I'm like you and will not bore non-runners with my tales.....
Clearly, you must understand that your story is much more inspiring than mine!
I'm really not sure that I inspire anyone, but I certainly get a lot of inspiration from others that blog!
That is awesome that you inspired people to get out there are do new things! Woohoo!
Indeed I and "Sir Giorgio" inspired some friends founding the Black Knight Army but they left too soon.
Very nice post.
Very nice. I too have a close-knit neighborhood and a very active one at that. I will say that one of my neighbors went from running a 5k a few yrs. back to a marathon this past fall and I think I may have influenced her.
i love when our passion and excitment for working out rubs off on other people. i think people are just scared and think they can't do it. until they know a real person who has done it!!
You definitely are an inspiration!
Myself, I know that friends and family have started running with a purpose since I started running, so I guess that in a way, they were inspired :)
You are absolutely an inspiration. I remember reading your blog last year and being blown away! I hope I'm inspiring someone out there, somewhere...:)
You are an inspiration, Mel! Great post!
You are so amazing and inspiring on your blog - it's awesome that IRL people are figuring it out too.
