Ok, so you might think I'm talking about ignoring all of you, since I haven't been around to your posts recently (Sorry!!) Or... maybe even my blog, since I haven't updated in more than a week... oops. It's certainly not because I have nothing to talk about, in fact, it's the opposite! I just haven't had the time, life happens!
I'm talking about ignoring myself, my own worst enemy!
Since my two triathlons last year, having burning shins in both, it's been in my mind. I'm not naive that training for anything is not only physical, but mental as well. The latter is the one that often proves more difficult of the two. A constant struggle. I tend to give in to the voice in my head.
Two weeks ago at the lake, during our tri group practice, I had a milestone swim, followed by a good bike ride. As I packed up my bike, I got my calf sleeves out of my bag. I had a great run with them on during my triathlon just the week before, let's see if they worked again! Coach suggested I try a brick run without, just to see. Suddenly, it was like losing a security blanket.
I did just a short 2k run with another girl, and while the shins started to burn towards the end, I didn't give in. I chose to ignore it. I knew I wasn't pushing an injury, or risking another, so felt it safe to push on. I wasn't going to listen to the voice or the pain, wasn't looking for an explanation of why it happens, and wasn't going to speak a word about it while running.
This past weekend, I had a tougher mentality as I headed out for my brick run, and didn't give it a thought! I just ran, and could've gone longer!
I'm doing my first Sprint Triathlon of the season on Saturday afternoon. Yes, afternoon. I'll be packing my newfound toughness and stubbornness with me, in case I need to do some more ignoring during the race!

Mental strength is one of those things I'm learning also - it's a tough one... it's when you finally get to that point where you just tell you body that you know what's best, and you're just going to do it like this, and nothing is going to get in your way it all just seems to fall into place... Now if only speed were all mental... :-D Good luck this weekend!
Pushing through pain is one of the most valuable and important things you learn as an athlete. It not just serves well if you want to win the race ... it also builds character and serves in everyday situations ... committing to goals, sticking with things when the going gets tough ... everytime you do this you deposit a little more into that character building account! :-)
Good for you! What burning?!
Good luck on Saturday! I'll be looking out for you!!

Way to be strong mentally! Toughing it out must have been tough but now you know you can run with or without the sleeves.
ohh an afternoon race sounds kinda brutal with the heat lately, but you'll kick arse.
I try not to use my compression stuff a lot and I think it is this mental thing like i only need it on reeeeallly tough days
